Pest update from Wellesbourne

We are now emptying the traps weekly rather than twice-weekly.

Between 23rd and 30th October our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 0 male and 0 female
  • Bean seed flies - 62
  • Pollen beetles - 0
  • Flea beetles - 5
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 0
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 3

We caught 12 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our second sowing of carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our pheromone traps (2 traps per pest).

We are no longer taking samples for cabbage root fly eggs.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News has been published - for the week ending 21st October.

  • Peach–potato aphids were captured at 11 suction trap sites, increasing at seven, with hotspots at Kirton (188) and Wellesbourne (177).
  • Cabbage aphids were captured and increasing at Kirton and Broom’s Barn.
  • Willow-carrot aphids (Cavariella aegopodii) were captured at Gogarbank (2), Preston (60), Kirton (16), Broom’s Barn (18) and Starcross (27) with hotspots at Dundee (303) and York (296). Male individuals were recorded from Dundee (21), Gogarbank (1), York (8), Preston (4) and Kirton (8).

There are lots and lots of bird-cherry oat aphids around!

Pest update from Wellesbourne

We are now emptying the traps weekly rather than twice-weekly.

Between 16th and 23rd October our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 0 male and 0 female
  • Bean seed flies - 27
  • Pollen beetles - 20
  • Flea beetles - 13
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 1
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 19 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our second sowing of carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, 2 silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our pheromone traps (2 traps per pest).

We are no longer taking samples for cabbage root fly eggs.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News has been published - for the week ending 14th October.

  • Peach–potato aphids were captured in suction traps at 11 sites, increasing at five - with a hotspot at Wellesbourne (107).
  • Mealy cabbage aphids were captured at five sites, increasing at three.
  • Willow-carrot aphids (Cavariella aegopodii) were captured at Gogarbank (93), York (5), Preston (32), Broom’s Barn (10), Wye (33) and Starcross (2) with a hotspot at Dundee (*469). Five male individuals were captured at Dundee and four at Gogarbank.

Between 9th and 16th October our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 1 male and 1 female;
  • Bean seed flies - 175;
  • Pollen beetles - 2;
  • Flea beetles - 30;
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 0;
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0;
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 6;

We caught 2 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our second sowing of carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 7 turnip moths in our pheromone traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 2 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News (for the week ending 7th October) has been published.

  • Peach–potato aphids were captured at eight suction trap sites, increasing in numbers at five.
  • Mealy cabbage aphids were recorded from, and increased in number at, Kirton (21) and Wellesbourne (19) this week.
  • Willow-carrot aphids (Cavariella aegopodii) were captured at York (11), Kirton (27), Broom’s Barn (5), Wellesbourne (1) and Hereford (1). Five male individuals were recorded from Broom’s Barn.

  • Bean seed flies - 52
  • Pollen beetles - 6
  • Flea beetles - 34
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 6
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 9

We caught 2 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our second sowing of carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our pheromone traps (2 traps per pest).

There was 1 cabbage root fly egg around our 15 brassica plants.

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News (for the week ending 30th September) has been published.

  • Peach–potato aphids were captured in 11 of the suction traps, increasing in numbers at 10.
  • Cabbage aphids were captured at 4 sites, increasing in numbers at all of these.
  • Willow-carrot aphids (Cavariella aegopodii) were captured at Dundee (34), Preston (4), Kirton (1), Hereford (2), Rothamsted (3) and Wye. No male individuals were recorded.

  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 4

We caught no carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our second sowing of carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and no turnip moths in our pheromone traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 0 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.
