Pest update from Wellesbourne

When the water traps in the swede plot were checked today there were:

• 7 male and 10 female cabbage root flies
• 30 bean seed flies
• 0 flea beetles
• Approx 4,300 pollen beetles
• 1 cabbage stem weevil
• 2 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 0 cabbage seed weevils
  

There were 5 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

64 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 25 and 28 June (around 15 plants).

3 diamond-back moths and 3 turnip moths were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 4 diamond-back moths on 2 carrot fly traps in the swede plot and are baited with a pheromone lure (experimental).

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid Newshas been released for the week ending 23rd June.

• Peach–potato aphids increased to around 150% of last week, with hotspots at Kirton and Wellesbourne.
• Potato aphid numbers have increased to nearly 175% of last week across Britain, apart from four sites.
• Cabbage aphids increased at four sites.
• Single currant–lettuce aphids were caught at Dundee, Gogarbank and Silwood Park. Four were found at Rothamsted.
• Willow–carrot aphids increased to around 245% of last week across much of England.
• Pea aphid numbers doubled across six sites this week, reaching double figures at three.
• Black bean aphid numbers have substantially increased from Starcross up to Preston this week, with a hotspot at Rothamsted.

• Approx 10,500 pollen beetles
• 19 cabbage stem weevils
• 4 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 0 cabbage seed weevils
  

There were 11 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

121 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 21 and 25 June (around 15 plants).

4 diamond-back moths and 1 turnip moth were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth, diamond-back moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 4 diamond-back moths on 5 carrot fly traps, 3 of which are in our carrots (above) and 2 are in the swede plot and are baited with a pheromone lure (experimental).

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid Newshas been released for the week ending 16th June.

• Peach–potato aphids decreased to half of that of last week, but with numbers still rising at sites in Northern Britain, as well as at Starcross.
• Potato aphid numbers also halved across much of Britain, apart from Dundee, Newcastle and Kirton
• Cabbage aphid numbers increased at five sites, but total numbers are down to a third of last week.
• Single currant–lettuce aphids were captured at Rothamsted and Starcross.
• Willow–carrot aphid numbers declined to around 40% of last week across all sites, except Starcross
• Pea aphid numbers increased at seven sites, reaching double figures at three.
• Black bean aphid numbers have increased substantially at seven sites, with a hotspot at Silwood Park.

• 3650 pollen beetles
• 25 cabbage stem weevils
• 0 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 0 cabbage seed weevils
  

There were 15 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

59 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 18 and 21 June (around 15 plants).

6 diamond-back moths and 1 turnip moth were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth, diamond-back moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 12 diamond-back moths on 6 carrot fly traps, 3 of which are in our carrots (above) and 3 are in the swede plot and are baited with a pheromone lure (experimental).

There were 27 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

11 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 14 and 18 June (around 15 plants).

8 diamond-back moths and 1 turnip moth were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth, diamond-back moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 2 diamond-back moths on the carrot fly traps.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News has been released for the week ending 9th June.

• Peach–potato aphids increased to 235% of those recorded in the previous week. A hotspot at Broom’s Barn approached numbers not recorded until mid-July in 2018
• Potato aphids also more than doubled in numbers across much of Britain, increasing substantially against the 10-year mean at many sites in England.
• Cabbage aphids increased at four sites with a hotspot at Writtle
• Four currant–lettuce aphids were captured at Broom’s Barn
• Willow–carrot aphid numbers declined to 44%, compared with last week, across all but three sites
• Pea aphid numbers increased at seven sites, including a first arrival at Gogarbank.
• Black bean aphid numbers increased at two sites.

• 136 pollen beetles
• 2 cabbage stem weevils
• 0 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 0 cabbage seed weevils
  

There were 4 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

No cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 10 and 14 June (around 15 plants).

15 diamond-back moths were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (turnip moth, silver Y moth, cabbage moth, diamond-back moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 28 diamond-back moths on the carrot fly traps. There was a large influx of moths into the UK on 12th June.

Seven cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 7 and 10 June (around 15 plants).

2 diamond-back moths and 2 turnip moths were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth, diamond-back moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid Newsis available - for week ending 2nd June.

• There was a hotspot of peach–potato aphids at Broom’s Barn, as well as a first arrival at Gogarbank.
• Potato aphids reached double figures at four sites in England.
• Cabbage aphid numbers have declined over much of Southern Britain but there is a hotspot at Broom’s
• Barn and rising numbers at Kirton.
• A single currant–lettuce aphid was captured at Newcastle.
• Willow–carrot aphid numbers have declined by 40% across all sites but Gogarbank and Starcross.
• Pea aphid increased at three sites this week, including first arrivals at Hereford.
• Black bean aphids have returned to single figures this week.
