Pest update from Wellesbourne

When the water traps in the swede plot were checked today there were:

• 30 male and 8 female cabbage root flies
• 10 bean seed flies
• 0 flea beetles
• Approx 2,550 pollen beetles
• 13 cabbage stem weevils
• 8 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 1 cabbage seed weevil
  

There were 8 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

285 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 2 and 5 July (around 15 plants).

2 diamond-back moths and 2 turnip moths were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 7 diamond-back moths on 5 carrot fly traps.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid Newshas been released for the week ending 30th June.

• Peach–potato aphid numbers decreased to around 50% of those caught last week but reached three figures at York.
• Potato aphid numbers have also decreased to nearly 50% of those caught last week.
• Cabbage aphid numbers decreased to around 40% of those caught last week.
• Four currant–lettuce aphids were captured at Kirton, as well as one from Dundee.
• Willow–carrot aphid numbers decreased to around 55% of those caught last week across much of England.
• Pea aphid numbers are down only very slightly compared with last week.
• Black bean aphid numbers have increased 135% compared with last week, primarily due to hotspots at Starcross and Wellesbourne, with numbers down at six sites.

• 8 bean seed flies
• 0 flea beetles
• Approx 5,200 pollen beetles
• 0 cabbage stem weevils
• 3 cabbage stem flea beetles
• 0 cabbage seed weevils
  

There were 6 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps in the new plot for 2019.

328 cabbage root fly eggs were laid between 28 June and 2 July (around 15 plants).

11 diamond-back moths and 1 turnip moth were captured. No moths were captured in our other pheromone traps (silver Y moth, cabbage moth). There are 2 traps for each species.

We also caught 10 diamond-back moths on 2 carrot fly traps in the swede plot and are baited with a pheromone lure (experimental).
