Trap captures at Wellesbourne since November 2020

We've kept our yellow water traps and our carrot fly traps going through the winter.

Adult bean seed flies have been captured throughout most of the winter. Becca McGowan is investigating their overwintering biology in her Warwick/AHDB/PGRO funded PhD. There is more about current work on bean seed fly on these web pages: Bean seed fly (warwick.ac.uk).

We have not captured any carrot flies since 24th November 2020.

Cabbage root fly captures ceased in November 2020 and we caught a small number of males last week (3). This is earlier emergence than the cabbage root fly forecast predicts for Wellesbourne. We did not find any cabbage root flies in the traps yesterday. The cabbage root fly forecast for Cornwall indicates that flies will be emerging now but not laying eggs until at least mid-April, although this may change depending on weather conditions.

We have captured a few pest beetles in the traps: pollen beetle, cabbage stem weevil, cabbage seed weevil, flea beetle since late February. Pollen beetle numbers have increased considerably this week - 100 in the 3 traps emptied yesterday.

Yesterday's trap captures were (over 7 days):

  • No carrot fly

In the three yellow water traps:

  • 11 bean seed fly
  • 100 pollen beetle
  • 5 cabbage stem weevil
  • 6 flea beetle
