Kenilworth Road Cycle Track – more information

Follow-up to Kenilworth Road Cycle Track – Coventry Council Consultation from Cycling to and around Warwick University

I've discovered the following:

1. New 2m wide cycle track from Cannon Hill Road junction to Warwickshire boundary.

2. Widening of existing 1.8m wide footway to create 3m shared use on north side of Gibbet Hill Rd. from junction with Kenilworth Rd. to Gibbet Hill Campus entrance.

3. Raised priority crossings at Cryfield Grange Rd. and Abberton Way.

4. At Cannon Hill Rd. a raised priority crossing was rejected as traffic calming is not deemed appropriate for this road as used by hearses etc.

5. Gibbet Hill Rd. a signalised crossing is not included as part of scheme but is under investigation

Issues I'm awaiting clarification on:

1. Will there be a raised priority crossing at Moreall Meadows (for shared ped/cyclist use on north side of Gibbet Hill Rd.)?

2. Although not raised, will the crossing at Cannon Hill Rd. clearly indicate that traffic turning into and out of Cannon Hill Rd. should give way to (cycle & pedestrian) traffic on Kenilworth Road?

  1. I've just received some further information:

    • It has not yet been decided where the link along Gibbet Hill Rd. would enter the University's Gibbet Hill Campus. One option could be to use Moreall Meadows and construct a new track across the grass verge opposite The Arboretum into the car park thus avoiding the main entrance completely.
    • It is "established wisdom" that where priority give-ways for cyclists and pedestrians are installed (with give-way markings and signing for motorists) a raised table is necessary.

Gibbet Hill already has a path in that avoids the main entrance
If it helps, this aerial view of campus is high quality link (I think you have to be signed in to view it).

  3. Very interesting image, but the only car-free entrance I know to the Gibbet Hill Campus from the public highway is on Gibbet Hill Road. It’s a pedestrian entrance that leads to a car park.

The problem with using that entrance is the crossing of Moreall Meadows. Crossings by cycle tracks of minor roads close to junctions with major roads have proven safety hazards. To cross safely the cyclist has look almost 180 degrees backwards. Thus it’s better if the crossing is at least a few metres away from the junction. If an entrance were made to the Gibbet Hill campus on Moreall Meadows, there would be no need to construct a track on the west side of Moreall Meadows or on Gibbet Hill Road west of Moreall Meadows.

  4. I've just sent off the following comments about the proposal to the designer

    Dear Michael,

Regarding the crossing of minor roads which join Kenilworth Road. At those junctions where raised priority crossings are not provided, there are safety grounds for placing the crossing a few metres away from Kenilworth Road.

    1) Cyclists will not have to turn their heads so far to see whether traffic is approaching the crossing.
    2) Cyclists crossing or about to cross will be closer to the centre of the field of vision of motorists turning into the minor road
    3) The intentions of motorists will be clearer – cyclists can safely ignore cars which have not begun or completed their turn into the minor road

It will also be easier for cyclists to cross when there are a few cars queueing to leave the minor road.

    On point (1) see link

"Women have been found more likely than men to experience certain types of serious accident; accordingly, they reported being substantially less able to look back over their shoulders and to tell when it is safe to pull into traffic."

I trust that the track will have a smooth surface.
