    Dear Rudo,

Reading your indications for the start of the ML course I wonder: when you say that we are gonna run the codes in Ubuntu what do you mean by it? How come the operating system is so important, shouldn’t we be able to run the code regardless of the OS? For instance, I see in your blog that the first piece of code is in jupyter notebook format, I often run such notebooks using the anaconda distribution in my MacBook.

    Best regards,

    Juan

Hi Juan, Djena and I will “help” with Ubuntu installations, while you’ll be on your own with MacOS. So if you are feeling comfortable running anaconda on your MAC, sure, do it. -Rudo

    Hello to you all,

I was just trying to make the programs run in my VirtualBox with Ubuntu 18.04 installed on it. I was able to install Anaconda perfectly and then the needed packages (TensorFlow, Keras, FastAI, etc.)

The Keras program runs perfectly and it takes about ~9 seconds to run through an epoch on my pc (I don’t know how good that is so feel free to comment on that).

But running the FastAI programs I ran into some problems… Apparently the virtual machine is not very compatible with any GPUs (either the Intel generic one or a very modest Nvidia one that I have) it gives all kinds of errors saying the drivers aren’t updated but then the system doesn’t recognize the GPUs, a nightmare… So I WOULDN’T RECOMMEND VIRTUALBOX for these kinds of programms running on FastAI if anyone wanted to try it. Of course if I am making a stupid mistake you can help me fix it.

I will now see how it goes with a different virtual machine, but it seems that GPU support is very limited for them.
