The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

• Peach–potato aphids have been caught across England this week in the STs (suction traps), with the highest number recorded from Wellesbourne (42) and now across all of Britain this year in YWT (yellow water traps), except North Scotland.
• The potato aphid was caught at five ST sites this bulletin week, increasing in number only at Preston. They have also now been found in low numbers from all regions this year in the YWT, apart from North Scotland.
• The mealy cabbage aphid was caught in single figures from six ST sites this week, increasing only at Silwood.
• A single currant-lettuce aphid was recorded from Wellesbourne in the ST this week.
• The willow ̶ carrot aphid was caught at all sites this week, with numbers generally down and only increasing at Newcastle. The highest number was recorded from Kirton (30).
• The pea aphid was caught in single figures at eleven sites across England this week and increasing at five.
• The black bean aphid was caught in single figures at five sites this week, no field reports have been received.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 8th and 12th June our 3 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 2 male and 5 female
• Bean seed flies - 8
• Pollen beetles - 54
• Flea beetles - 30
• Cabbage stem weevil - 2
• Cabbage seed weevil - 8
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 25 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 5 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 0 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

• Peach–potato aphids (Myzus persicae) have been caught across England this week in the suction traps (ST) and now across all of Britain this year in yellow water traps (YWT), except North Scotland and Angus & Perthshire.
• The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught at 10 ST sites this bulletin week, increasing in number at seven. They have also now been found in low numbers from all regions this year in the YWT apart from North Scotland, Angus & Perthshire, Borders and East Anglia.
• The mealy cabbage aphid was caught in ST sites across central and southern England, with a hotspot at Writtle (87) and a first arrival from Broom’s Barn (28/5).
• Single currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were caught at Dundee and Silwood in the ST this week.
• The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at all sites but Newcastle this week, with numbers increasing at seven sites. The highest number caught was from Writtle (371).
• The pea aphid pea aphid was caught at nine sites this week and included first arrivals at York (30/5), Wellesbourne (29/5) and Rothamsted (30/5).
• We have received field reports of pea aphid colonies from south Lincolnshire. Combining peas should be sprayed when around 20% of plants are infested and vining peas when 15% are infested.
• The first arrival of black bean aphids has been recorded from Dundee (31/5), Edinburgh (1/6), Preston (30/5), Wellesbourne (1/6), Writtle (28/5), Silwood (30/5) this week in our traps. We have now also received field reports from crops in south Lincolnshire and north Kent. The threshold for black bean aphid in field and broad beans is 10% colonisation.

• Flea beetles - 9

• Cabbage seed weevil - 1
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 2

We caught 20 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 4 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Between 1st and 5th June our 3 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 1 male and 4 female
• Bean seed flies - 8
• Pollen beetles - 146
• Flea beetles - 35
• Cabbage stem weevil - 16
• Cabbage seed weevil - 18
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 7

We caught 47 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 10 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 4 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 27 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest eidtion of AHDB Aphid News for the week ending 27 May is now available.

Peach–potato aphids (Myzus persicae) have been caught throughout the south of England in the suction-traps and in the Midlands in the yellow water-pan traps. Tests show that Turnip yellows virus pressure was high but lower than normal for this time of year.

Low numbers of the mealy cabbage aphid were caught in ST sites across England.

Single currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were caught at Hereford and Rothamsted ST this week.

The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at thirteen sites this week with the highest numbers at Broom’s Barn (704) and Writtle (239).

The pea aphid was caught in low numbers at five sites this week and included first arrivals at Edinburgh (24/5), Preston (27/5), Writtle (25/5), Silwood (25/5), Wye (25/5) and Starcross (22/5).

No field reports of pea aphid have been received so far. Combining peas should be sprayed when around 20% of plants are infested and vining peas when 15% are infested.

A few black bean aphids have been caught in our traps, but no field reports yet. The threshold for black bean aphid in field and broad beans is 10% colonisation.

We caught 19 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 10 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 3 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 22 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Between 25th and 29th May our 3 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 1 male and 1 female
• Bean seed flies - 4
• Pollen beetles - 64
• Flea beetles - 30
• Cabbage stem weevil - 11
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We also checked the carrot fly traps and caught 1 fly on 3 traps in overwintered carrots and 28 flies on 3 traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 5 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 3 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 12 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News has been released - for the week ending 20th May.

• The warm and dry weather conditions has resulted in another substantial increase in the total number of aphids flying this bulletin week.
• Peach・potato aphids (Myzus persicae) were recorded from Writtle and Starcross but no new arrivals were found. An individual was caught in the FERA yellow water-pan trap network from the Midlands.
• The first arrival of willow ̶ carrot aphids were recorded from Dundee and Newcastle this bulletin week. All fourteen suction-traps have now recorded this species as well as yellow water traps across several parts of England.
• The first arrival of potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was recorded from Silwood this week.
• First arrival of black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) from the suction-trap network was recorded from Starcross this bulletin week and in yellow water traps from East Anglia.

Between 22nd and 25th May our 3 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 7 males and 3 females
• Bean seed flies - 16
• Pollen beetles - 11
• Flea beetles - 2
• Cabbage stem weevil - 1

We also checked the carrot fly traps and caught 4 flies on 3 traps in overwintered carrots and 128 flies on 3 traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, silver Y moths or cabbage moths in our traps but one turnip moth - the first of the year (2 traps per pest).

There were 9 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.
