Pest update from Wellesbourne

We have trapped a few more bean seed flies. Totals from 3 yellow water traps:

3 March 4

No carrot flies or cabbage root flies have been trapped.


We've also been counting the aphids on our overwintering carrots again:


3 March 2.7 per plant


All of these are wingless.

Update on pest activity at Wellesbourne

We have trapped a few more bean seed flies. Totals from 3 yellow water traps:

18 Feb 12

25 Feb 7

No carrot flies or cabbage root flies have been trapped.


We've also been counting the aphids on our overwintering carrots:

10 January (first sowing in 2019) 0.6 per plant

31 January (first sowing) 0.7 per plant

26 February (second sowing in 2019) 14.3 per plant

All of these are wingless.

Update on pest activity at Wellesbourne

We have had carrot fly traps and yellow water traps out all winter. We have not captured any carrot flies since 10th December but have carried on finding bean seed flies - summarised below:

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News has been published.

The total numbers of pest aphids captured in the suction traps during the week ending 17 November are as follows: peach-potato aphid (5), potato aphid (0), willow-carrot aphid (3), cabbage aphid (0), currant-lettuce aphid (0), pea aphid (0) and black bean aphid (0).

Pest update from Wellesbourne

When the water traps in the swede plot were checked today there were:

  • 0 male and 2 female cabbage root flies
  • 36 bean seed flies

There were 39 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps.

The total numbers of pest aphids captured in the suction traps during the week ending 10 November are as follows: peach-potato aphid (4), potato aphid (0), willow-carrot aphid (45 at Broom's Barn), cabbage aphid (0), currant-lettuce aphid (0), pea aphid (0) and black bean aphid (0).

Pest update from Wellesbourne

When the water traps in the swede plot were checked today there were:

  • 0 male and 2 female cabbage root flies
  • 37 bean seed flies

There were 10 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps.

No turnip moths or silver Y moths in pheromone traps. There are 2 traps for each species.

The total numbers of pest aphids captured in the suction traps during the week ending 10 November are as follows: peach-potato aphid (10), potato aphid (0), willow-carrot aphid (134 - with 114 at Broom's Barn and 10 at Kirton), cabbage aphid (0), currant-lettuce aphid (1), pea aphid (0) and black bean aphid (3).

Pest update from Wellesbourne

When the water traps in the swede plot were checked on Tuesday 12th November there were:

  • 0 male and 2 female cabbage root flies
  • 72 bean seed flies

There were 17 carrot flies on the 3 sticky traps.

No turnip moths or silver Y moths in pheromone traps. There are 2 traps for each species.

The total numbers of pest aphids captured in the suction traps during the week ending 3 November are as follows: peach-potato aphid (10), potato aphid (0), willow-carrot aphid (264 - with 229 at Dundee, 10 at York and 14 at Kirton), cabbage aphid (0), currant-lettuce aphid (0), pea aphid (0) and black bean aphid (10).
