Rothamsted suction trap captures

The Rothamsted Aphid Bulletin for the week ending 27th July has been released. 2014webbulletin17.pdf.

  • Cabbage aphid was captured at 7 sites with highest numbers at Starcross (12).
  • Willow-carrot aphid numbers are now very low.
  • Potato aphid was captured at 3 Scottish sites, Newcastle and Starcross.
  • Peach-potato aphid was captured at 4 Scottish sites, Newcastle and Writtle.
  • Currant-lettuce aphid was caught at Elgin and Wellesbourne (1 at each site).
  • Black bean aphid was captured at 4 Scottish sites, Newcastle, Wellesbourne, Hereford, Rothamsted and Writtle.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between Friday (1st) and Monday (4th) we captured:

  • 40 carrot flies on traps in this year's crop of carrots (3 traps).
  • Carrot fly numbers still have not increased as 'expected' and it may be that the recent hot weather has caused at least some of the population to aestivate in the pupal stage. A similar thing happened at this time last year and although we captured low numbers of flies over an extended period, damage was high when we harvested our trials in the early autumn.

We collected a total of 15 cabbage root fly eggs from around our 15 newly-planted cauliflower plants.

The 3 yellow water traps caught:

7 male and 7 female cabbage root flies

  • 12 bean seed flies
  • 1 pollen beetle
  • 107 flea beetles
  • 4 small white butterflies.

There were no silver Y moths, no diamond-back moths and no turnip moths (2 pheromone traps per species).

  • Total of 72 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 cauliflower plants.
  • There was 1 turnip moth, no diamond-back moths or silver Y moths (2 traps per species).

The 3 yellow water traps caught:

  • 5 male and 8 female cabbage root flies
  • 18 bean seed flies
  • 4 pollen beetles
