Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 22nd and 26th June our 3yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 3 male and 9 female
• Bean seed flies - 15
• Pollen beetles - approx 12,000
• Flea beetles - 0
• Cabbage stem weevil - 3
• Cabbage seed weevil - 0
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 3 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 1 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 19th and 22nd June our 3yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 7 male and 6 female
• Bean seed flies - 17
• Pollen beetles - approx 7,000
• Flea beetles - 0
• Cabbage stem weevil - 0
• Cabbage seed weevil - 0
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 3 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 7 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

• The peach–potato aphid was caught at eleven ST (sucton trap) sites, increasing at eight. The highest number was recorded from Broom’s Barn (56).
• The potato aphid was caught at six ST sites in single figures, increasing in number at Dundee, Wye and Starcross.
• The cabbage aphid was caught from seven ST sites, increasing at four.
• A single currant-lettuce aphid was recorded from Silwood Park.
• The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at all ST sites apart from Newcastle, with numbers generally down and only increasing at York, Wellesbourne and Starcross.
• The pea aphid was caught in single figures at ten ST sites and increasing at eight.
• The black bean aphid was caught at nine sites including a hotspot at Starcross.

• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 7 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 0 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Between 12th and 15th June our 2 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 3 male and 0 female
• Bean seed flies - 6
• Pollen beetles - 608
• Flea beetles - 5
• Cabbage stem weevil - 2
• Cabbage seed weevil - 0
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 14 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 2 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 2 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

• Peach–potato aphids have been caught across England this week in the STs (suction traps), with the highest number recorded from Wellesbourne (42) and now across all of Britain this year in YWT (yellow water traps), except North Scotland.
• The potato aphid was caught at five ST sites this bulletin week, increasing in number only at Preston. They have also now been found in low numbers from all regions this year in the YWT, apart from North Scotland.
• The mealy cabbage aphid was caught in single figures from six ST sites this week, increasing only at Silwood.
• A single currant-lettuce aphid was recorded from Wellesbourne in the ST this week.
• The willow ̶ carrot aphid was caught at all sites this week, with numbers generally down and only increasing at Newcastle. The highest number was recorded from Kirton (30).
• The pea aphid was caught in single figures at eleven sites across England this week and increasing at five.
• The black bean aphid was caught in single figures at five sites this week, no field reports have been received.

• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 25 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 5 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 0 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

• Peach–potato aphids (Myzus persicae) have been caught across England this week in the suction traps (ST) and now across all of Britain this year in yellow water traps (YWT), except North Scotland and Angus & Perthshire.
• The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught at 10 ST sites this bulletin week, increasing in number at seven. They have also now been found in low numbers from all regions this year in the YWT apart from North Scotland, Angus & Perthshire, Borders and East Anglia.
• The mealy cabbage aphid was caught in ST sites across central and southern England, with a hotspot at Writtle (87) and a first arrival from Broom’s Barn (28/5).
• Single currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were caught at Dundee and Silwood in the ST this week.
• The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at all sites but Newcastle this week, with numbers increasing at seven sites. The highest number caught was from Writtle (371).
• The pea aphid pea aphid was caught at nine sites this week and included first arrivals at York (30/5), Wellesbourne (29/5) and Rothamsted (30/5).
• We have received field reports of pea aphid colonies from south Lincolnshire. Combining peas should be sprayed when around 20% of plants are infested and vining peas when 15% are infested.
• The first arrival of black bean aphids has been recorded from Dundee (31/5), Edinburgh (1/6), Preston (30/5), Wellesbourne (1/6), Writtle (28/5), Silwood (30/5) this week in our traps. We have now also received field reports from crops in south Lincolnshire and north Kent. The threshold for black bean aphid in field and broad beans is 10% colonisation.

We caught 20 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 4 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

• Cabbage root flies - 1 male and 4 female
• Bean seed flies - 8
• Pollen beetles - 146
• Flea beetles - 35
• Cabbage stem weevil - 16
• Cabbage seed weevil - 18
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 7

We caught 47 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 10 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 4 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 27 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.
