Cutworm update

Until the end of last week it looked as if the 'risk' of cutworm damage to susceptible crops was quite high (output from the cutworm forecast). However, the heavy rainfall in some locations over the last few days has changed the situation. Rothamsted suction trap captures – week ending 22 June

The information below relates to suction-trap samples collected during the week ending 22 June. Despite reasonable conditions, total numbers of aphids in the suction-traps decreased somewhat, but the diversity of aphid species within this total increased. 2014webbulletin12.pdfahdb_aphid_news_20140627.pdf

  • Numbers of peach–potato aphid (Myzus persicae) remain high in central and eastern England. The first individual has been caught in the suction-trap at Dundee, and this only the fourth in the Scottish traps so far this year.
  • The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught across the Country in low numbers. Numbers of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) have increased slightly at three sites this week. Field reports indicate threshold levels are being reached in some parts of southern England.
  • The cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) was caught at five sites this week in low numbers.
  • The numbers of willow carrot aphid (Cavariella aegopodii) have declined further since last week.
  • No currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were captured.
  • Black bean aphids (Aphis fabae) were captured at 7 sites – with the highest numbers (14) captured at Writtle and Rothamsted (7).

Pest update Wellesbourne

Between Tuesday (24th) and Friday (27th) we found:

  • 6 carrot flies on traps in this year's carrots (3 traps)

In the 3 water traps in the 'new' cauliflower plot:

  • 15 male and 42 female cabbage root flies
  • 41 bean seed flies
  • 20 pollen beetles
  • 144 flea beetles
  • 1 cabbage stem weevil

We collected a total of 14 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 newly-planted cauliflower plants (planted 15 April).

There were no diamond-back moths, 3 silver Y moths and 13 turnip moths (2 traps).

On 25th June there were 1 winged and 1 parasitised willow-carrot aphids on 3 x 0.5 m lengths of carrot row.

Pest update Wellesbourne

Between Friday (20th) and Tuesday (24th) we captured:

  • 24 carrot flies on traps in this year's crop of carrots (3 traps)

We collected a total of 54 cabbage root fly eggs from around our 15 'old' cauliflower plants (planted 15 April) and 6 eggs from around 15 newly-planted cauliflower plants.

The 3 yellow water traps caught:

  • 8 male and 41 female cabbage root flies
  • 39 bean seed flies
  • 76 pollen beetles
  • 757 flea beetles!!!
  • 5 cabbage stem weevils
  • 2 cabbage seed weevils

There were 5 turnip moths (cutworm) (2 pheromone traps) - no silver Y moths or diamond-back moths.

Pest update Wellesbourne

Between Tuesday (17th) and Friday (20th) we found:

  • 24 carrot flies on traps in this year's carrots (3 traps)

In the 3 water traps in the 'new' cauliflower plot:

  • 8 male and 26 female cabbage root flies
  • 61 bean seed flies
  • 120 pollen beetles
  • 74 flea beetles

We collected a total of 69 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 cauliflower plants (planted 15 April).

There were no diamond-back or silvery Y moths but 5 turnip moths (2 traps).

On 18th June there were 4 winged, 10 wingless and 4 parasitised willow-carrot aphids on 3 x 0.5 m lengths of carrot row.


Rothamsted suction trap captures for week ending 15th June

The latest aphid bulletin has just been released 2014webbulletin11.pdfahdb_aphid_news_20140620.pdf. A warm and dry period in the week ending 15th June resulted in good conditions for aphid flight. Natural enemy impact is growing, in particular ladybirds and aphid parasitoids are being reported more frequently.

  • Numbers of peach–potato aphid (Myzus persicae) remain high in eastern England. The first Scottish individual has been caught in the suction-trap at Edinburgh.
  • The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught across the Country in low numbers.
  • The mealy cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) was caught at five sites this week in low numbers.
  • The numbers of willow carrot aphid (Cavariella aegopodii) are generally unchanged or declining compared to last week.
  • The currant-lettuce aphid (Nasonovia ribisnigri) was caught at Rothamsted and Starcross (1 at each location).
  • The black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) was caught at 8 sites. Highest numbers were 4 at Rothamsted and 3 at Writtle.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between Friday (13th) and Tuesday (17th) we captured:

  • 53 carrot flies on traps in this year's crop of carrots (3 traps)

We collected a total of 0 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 cauliflower plants (planted 15 April). The 3 water traps caught:

  • 1 male and 26 female cabbage root flies
  • 68 bean seed flies
  • 90 pollen beetle
  • 198 flea beetles
  • 3 cabbage stem weevil
  • 1 cabbage seed weevil

There was 1 turnip moth (cutworm) (2 pheromone traps).

Pest update Wellesbourne

Between Tuesday (10th) and Friday (13th) we found:

  • 114 carrot flies on traps in this year's carrots (3 traps)

In the 3 water traps in the 'new' cauliflower plot:

  • 0 male and 19 female cabbage root flies
  • 68 bean seed flies
  • 0 pollen beetles
  • 0 flea beetles
  • 4 cabbage stem weevils adn 1 cabbage seed weevil

We collected a total of 0 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 cauliflower plants (planted 15 April).

There were no diamond-back, silvery Y or turnip moths in our traps.

Rothamsted suction trap captures for week ending 8 June

This week's bulletin has just been released.
Despite some windy conditions mid-week, aphid flight activity continued largely unabated this bulletin week. Natural enemy pressure also continues to build, in particular ladybirds, parasitoids and some aphid fungal pathogens.
  • Numbers of peach–potato aphid (Myzus persicae) have increased further in eastern England, but still none in our Scottish suction-traps.
  • The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught across the Country in low numbers.
  • Numbers of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) have increased this week, especially in eastern England.
  • The cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) was caught at five sites this week. Field reports have been received of infestations on brassicas already damaged by flea beetles in Kent and S.Essex.
  • The willow carrot aphid (Cavariella aegopodii) migration has started to tail-off in central and southern England.
  • A single currant-lettuce aphid (Nasonovai ribisnigri) was captured at each of Kirton, Rothamsted and Starcross.
  • A single black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) was trapped at each of Dundee, Writtle, Rothamsted and Starcross.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between Friday (6th) and Tuesday (10th) we captured:

  • 161 carrot flies on traps in this year's crop of carrots (3 traps)

We collected a total of 8 cabbage root fly eggs from around 15 cauliflower plants (planted 15 April). The 3 water traps caught:

  • 0 male and 9 female cabbage root flies
  • 63 bean seed flies
  • 19 pollen beetle
  • 68 flea beetles
  • 6 cabbage stem weevil
  • 4 cabbage seed weevil

There was 1 silver Y moth and 1 turnip moth (cutworm) (2 pheromone traps per species).

Today there were 2 winged, 3 wingless and 3 parasitised willow-carrot aphids on 3 x 0.5 metre lengths of row of carrots.
