Aphid bulletins
The latest editions of the Rothamsted Suction Trap Bulletin and AHDB Aphid News are attached. The information of interest to vegetable and salad growers is as follows:

The peach–potato aphid (Myzus persicae) was caught at seven sites this week, with a first arrival at Wellesbourne (18/5). Both current and accumulated totals are below average.

The potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) was caught at four sites this week in low numbers, with first arrivals at Wellesbourne (24/5) and Hereford (22/5). Aphids have been found on potato ‘ground keepers’ in south Lincolnshire.

Numbers of the willow ̶ carrot aphid (Cavariella aegopodii) have increased at 10/12 sites this week, with highest numbers in southern and eastern England.

The mealy cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) was caught at three sites this week, with first arrivals at Wellesbourne (22/5), Hereford (22/5) and Starcross (21/5). Accumulated numbers are well below the 10-year means.

The pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) was caught at two sites this week, with a first arrival at Wellesbourne (22/5).

The black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) has been caught at seven sites this week.

The first currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) of the year were captured (Wye and Starcross).

Pest update from Wellesbourne
Today we found:
- 0 male and 8 female cabbage root flies (3 water traps)
- 35 bean seed flies (3 traps)
- 94 carrot flies (3 traps) in our new carrots
- 1 pollen beetle
- 1 cabbage stem weevil
- 62 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants)
- 3 turnip moths (2 traps) - first of the year

- 1 pollen beetle
- 1 cabbage stem weevil
- 107 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants)

Pest update from Wellesbourne
Today we found:
- 3 male and 22 female cabbage root flies (3 water traps)
- 156 bean seed flies (3 traps)
- 119 carrot flies (3 traps) in our new carrots
- 1 flea beetle
- 67 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants)

The peach–potato aphid has been caught at six sites in southern and eastern England this week, including a first arrival at Silwood within a few days of both the 10-year average and the forecast.

The potato aphid has been caught at four sites this week in low numbers, and found on lettuce in Kent.

Numbers of the willow ̶ carrot aphid (Cavariella aegopodii) have increased this week, with highest numbers in south eastern England.

The first mealy cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) caught in our UK traps this year turned up at Writtle this week, almost two weeks earlier than the 10-year average.

Five pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) were caught this week across three sites in southern England.

The black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) has been caught at six sites this week.

This week’s suction trap catches were dominated by a big flight of sycamore aphids.

Willow–carrot aphid
We counted the numbers of willow-carrot aphids on our new carrots at Wellesbourne on 7th May and found 5 winged and 2 wingless aphids on 3 x 0.5 m lengths of row of carrot. Today there were 22 winged and 18 wingless aphids.

Pest update from Wellesbourne
Yesterday we found:
- 1 male and 22 female cabbage root flies (3 water traps)
- 156 bean seed flies (3 traps)
- 124 carrot flies (3 traps) in our overwintered carrots - flies emerging from pupae in the soil
- 100 carrot flies (3 traps) in our new carrots - flies arriving from emergence site
- 2 flea beetles
- 86 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants)

Yesterday we found:
- 9 male and 13 female cabbage root flies (3 water traps)
- 144 bean seed flies (3 traps)
- 240 carrot flies (3 traps) in our overwintered carrots - flies emerging from pupae in the soil
- 152 carrot flies (3 traps) in our new carrots - flies arriving from emergence site
- 1 pollen beetle, 5 flea beetles, 1 cabbage stem weevil (3 traps)
- 22 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants)
