First capture of the year in the suction trap at Wellesbourne

We caught a single fresh willow-carrot aphid, Cavariella aegopodii during the period 1st to 7th February 2016! None were captured elsewhere and because it is so early in the year we assume it must have overwintered as an active individual on an umbellifer, as it is far too early to have hatched from an egg and flown from willow. Since we have quite a lot of overwintered carrots in the vicinity - to maintain the carrot fly population - it probably came from these.
