AHDB Aphid News

The latest eidtion of AHDB Aphid News for the week ending 27 May is now available.

Peach–potato aphids (Myzus persicae) have been caught throughout the south of England in the suction-traps and in the Midlands in the yellow water-pan traps. Tests show that Turnip yellows virus pressure was high but lower than normal for this time of year.

Low numbers of the mealy cabbage aphid were caught in ST sites across England.

Single currant-lettuce aphids (Nasonovia ribisnigri) were caught at Hereford and Rothamsted ST this week.

The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at thirteen sites this week with the highest numbers at Broom’s Barn (704) and Writtle (239).

The pea aphid was caught in low numbers at five sites this week and included first arrivals at Edinburgh (24/5), Preston (27/5), Writtle (25/5), Silwood (25/5), Wye (25/5) and Starcross (22/5).

No field reports of pea aphid have been received so far. Combining peas should be sprayed when around 20% of plants are infested and vining peas when 15% are infested.

A few black bean aphids have been caught in our traps, but no field reports yet. The threshold for black bean aphid in field and broad beans is 10% colonisation.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 29th May and 1st June our 3 yellow water traps captured:

• Cabbage root flies - 3 male and 6 female
• Bean seed flies - 13
• Pollen beetles - 144
• Flea beetles - 6
• Cabbage stem weevil - 3
• Cabbage seed weevil - 1
• Cabbage stem flea beetle - 2

We caught 19 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 10 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 3 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 22 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.
