Great papaer

This is in my eyes a good paper. I reccomend to read it. I know we are all striving with project (oh my God) but i will give a great perspective for your future obligation within the business life. It also depicts that we are lucky because we studiesd in an excellent department. . . . .

3 weeks on work

I have been observing facts for three weeks in a small and medium enterprise in Greece. When i come back home i am thinking of what i have seen all day. . . . . . It is amazing. . . . . If we conduct a gap analysis between Deming's view and the current practices we will see that there is no chance for having having a bridge.. . . . . .

Every paragraph of his book is so so so so absolutely true.. . . . . .Fear is everwhere. People do not give feadback to the management for mistakes because of it. Quality is bad. People lack in pride for their work. There is no constancy. Philosophy of management is restricted in pure numbers. Characteristically i have seen producing a mould of thousand euros in 3 days..................... Oh my God........... Without thinking of it. I am pretty sure that there will be a problem on that. Just like previous moulds of the company which had a problem. Where is Design for six sigma philosophy? Where is the common aim? Where is quality?

We have work to do after MBE. I think we will make it. . . It is our duty to serve and lead the change..........................

Appreciation for the system is lost

We have never learnt to respect the sytem. Never never. . . . I am trying to work in my project. The word trying referes not in perosnal problems (like i want to go to the sea or i want to see my girlfriend) no no, i am more than willing to work on it and i am doing so. However i am trying to write my observation and make the necessary statistical analysis on my PC while the Greek Electricity Provider Company stops providing with electricity the place that i am working.

They react and protest against the new economic reformations of the Greek Goverment. I accept their fear of losing their job. I accept their problems and their fights (i have never said that management is right in that country) but i do not acept the fact that they are terminate electricity provision in the industrial territory of Greece. To make the things worse they industries are open when do that.

Just think how much money was Toyota loosing when they stopped working per hour............... Oh my Gosh

I feel depressed. . . . . .

Coming back in my country and I was in front of a great surprise. I was reading in the news papers that the country has problems but I didn?t expect this. The country is devastated. . . Analyzing this situation I tried to understand what is going on. I have spoken with people around the country from every social class so that I can understand all the arguments.

Yesterday I was for dinner with some managers. We started discussing about the crisis. I started speaking about the necessary transformation without giving specific points so that they can argue what they conceive as transformation.

They gave me the following answer

yes we need a transformation, we need to push more the working force that doesn?t work. . . . . We have to reduce their salaries make them fear that they will lose their work so that we can increase the productivity. It came as a shock to me. I have spoken with people from the working class and they were telling “The only thing we want is to work with dignity”.

They argue that people do not work in productivity when the 300 members of the parliament cannot find a common ground so that they can fight united the crisis. Our people were sacrificed in the temple of short term thinking and easy profit which is responsibility of our management. Out people are misused and abused.

Another example came yesterday when I was participating in a meeting within a Greek SME. During the meeting the managing director-owner of the company stood up went to a window to see the production line came back and said:

“We are spending to much time here and the workers on the shopping floor do not work because they do not have someone to force them they are lazy” This reminded me Paul and Graeme who were telling us “When people feel fear they will both hide the mistakes and do what is enough so that the boss will not shout at them. “Someone in Germany called it Management by fear, which is still better” Dr. Edward Deming

Working for the application of the project

I am working one week now for the practical part (case study) of my project. While till now I have not discussed in depth the project but I have some free dialogues with in respect to the topic I have noticed the following contradiction. On one hand they understand the need of doing about the topic of the project. . . . . On the other hand when you try to start talking about the best practices identified from the literature you find resistance. When I am thinking of that in my mind comes the father Deming. “Doing your best is not enough” or “The system cannot understand itself”……. He was so f***king right. . . . (Sorry but he was). What I have to say is that I start to realize that conducting transformation to a system it will be more difficult from what we expected to be . . . . . . However MBE has given us all the knowledge that we need so that we can understand ourselves the system and its problems as well as what we have to challenge. . . We love MBE…………… :)

SoPK for our PMAs and project………….

I was thinking which is the best way to face a PMA……….. After nine months in MBE when I am trying to answer a question I first look it through the eyes of SoPK (I love it)………………… So the same took place here as well.

What really should happen when we face a PMA are the following four categories of questions. We ask ourselves:

·        “Which are the world theories that have been developed in respect to our PMA¢s topic?” Then we ask ourselves “How this theories could be applied in the specific case of our question so that the cycle of knowledge could be developed and answer the PMA?”

·        What are the differences on the theories out there? Can we understand variation? Are all of them inside the limits or there is a special cause opinion? What the different approaches support and how the special causes- theories break the rules?

·        Can the different theories and contradictions be utilized under the concept of a common system so that they could develop a unite force, despite the differences, that will answer the PMA? How we critically assess and combine those theories so that we can create a complete and homogenous answer?

·        How these theories have been applied and how they have affected people¢s psychology? Did they have positive or negative outcome in their application in respect to the core asset of organizations named people? How this could affect our case?

Of course we should not forget that everything starts with personal transformation and if we are not ready to accept the challenge we will fail despite the correct application of SoPK in our work………

Also by correcting the bias of scale this principles could be applied in our project as well . . . .

Keep on blogging guys we learn a lot from that … … … … ..

When the end comes we move to another dimension

More or less we have reached the end of (this is my personal opinion) the most exciting year of my life. Yes it was, and still is, exhausting but I bet that we will miss it. Thinking today of what we learnt I came to a conclusion that first of all we realized and self-determine ourselves. Yes, I think that we have gained knowledge of what we really are which are our strengths or weaknesses, and based on that we can plan our actions so that we can improve our lives.

This made me think of one philosophical phrase that I really like:

The self-determination of the “I am” derives by understanding the “We are”. . . . . . .

Thinking of that phrase and linking it with the MBE experience I think that I realized the magic of this course. We understood our selves through the eyes of the “we”. We allow other people to reflect their perceptions regarding us and we reflect on them. We didn¢t act us individuals without philosophical orientation; we know what we have to do because we were aware of the external environment. We took into consideration of our colleagues and take care of them. We achieved our aims – purpose by being helped or helping the rest of the people. More or less MBE gave us a vision and showed us the way to it.

Of course we are different and our personal vision will be different (variation is part of our life) but we are a common cause. We all know what we have to do so that we can introduce excellence. We were a team and we learn how to act as a team.

This is the difference that forced a WMG tutor (not from MBE) to say that “MBE works” when he show our presentations. It is not that we are better from the other student. Maybe we can say that we are different. However we can give an alternative, a new vision. We can say tomorrow in the organization that we will work “I have a dream”…

Yes my friends we have understood ourselves and we know what we have to do. As Deming says it is now time to do our best…………….

The first thing you do when you do not know something …….. . . . . . Is that so simple?

Have we ever thought of the first thing that we do when we are not aware of something? Personally I Google it. . . . I want to learn about it. . . . Even if they are health symptoms, I Google it. Is a process that we take it as granted since we belong in information generation. However have we asked our parents or even our grand-parents about that??????? When my grand-mother saw internet she said “Do Germans spy us from that” (With all the respect to Germans but you have left your sign after world war 2 :P)……..

Her mind went that someone can observe your actions and learn about you through internet. Absolutely normal reaction in my eyes... In the same way it can have implications in organizations as well. Tomorrow we can use it for obtaining information from every corner of the world instantly. Why we shouldn¢t do so?

However there is something that made me be cautious about internet and generally the easy access to information. . . How we evaluate it? There is a lot of information out there? How we judge their use? Tough I think to give an answer on that! It is our theory that will manipulate and translate all that information into knowledge. However on what is that theory based?

The only sure is that we should be very cautious about the sources we use as well as our aim….. I do not have any idea on that????

Thoughts in Knowledge……………

Authors support that there are two types of Knowledge including tacit and explicit……….. However I am thinking of that a lot and I am tending to support the argument that explicit knowledge is not knowledge.

Can knowledge be transmitted? I really do not know. . . . . For understanding that we have to see the difference between knowledge and information………. Knowledge requires information and theory to be created (see Deming information is not knowledge). . . . Are all these that we read in the papers knowledge. . . . .. I think it is information. We filter them with our theory and create our personal (tacit Knowledge)………….

There are authors who supported that the difference between explicit knowledge and information is meaningless and that they are almost the same…………..

That is a great dilemma. . . . If we do not clarify their differences, we cannot manage knowledge since data and info constitute the basis of knowledge pyramid………...

May 18, 2011

Variation on information interpretation . . . How we differentiate ourselves from the others?

There was an era when having internet in your company was a competitive advantage by itself... However in our days internet is a necessity or else a must. . . . Think that in Kano¢s model of needs . .... .

So how you can gain competitive advantage, in manipulating and exploiting the infinite sources of information? I think it is the process itself and not the IT support. . . .In KM terms it is the soft aspect (people, culture, structure) rather the hard aspect of KM. This is why in my eyes organizations should focus more on people than in IT when it comes to KM. . . . .

MBE learnt as how to search for information. Instead of providing us with lectures and offering us the knowledge, out tutors gave us the driving forces supported as and let us search for knowledge by ourselves. ,. . . . I think this is a success that can highly be attributed to MBE culture. . . .

We tomorrow will find easier to search for info than other students of traditional courses. . Again MBE is different and made us different as well……….. Also we have learnt how to filter this info. . . Paul today said our problem is that we have a lot of information available and easy accessible………………. Yap we can find anything any time we wish……. Then the thing that will differentiate us from the rest is the way we translate the same information into knowledge ……..

This differentiation some of us will call it competitive advantage. I prefer to call it variation necessary for improving the whole system….. :P

Addicted with MBE…… Finally understand the power of Knowledge…….

From the beginning of this module we hear Paul saying with this strange “Deming¢ voice:

“Be guided by theory, there is no substitute for knowledge”………. Have we ever understood what the hell this phrase means……??????? Do we really realize the magnitude of Knowledge power?

Well I am doing my Management of Change PMA….. While the module in my eyes has a lot of similarities with MBE modules it develops a different perspective than MBE. Professor Dee is a really practical tutor and when it comes in PMAs she doesn¢t want fully referenced PMAs with a lot of academic Jargons as she calls them. I remember her phrase which was:

“You MBE people do not give a PMA with 40 references” ahahahaha…….. It is funny because the average of references in our PMAs I assume it is 28 or something like that and she aimed on MBE students…….. J…….. We love Dee……..

Thus I decided to read 10 to 15 references and do the PMA. This requires a lot of thinking and to write things by your mind. . . . . However when I am trying to do so directly my mind goes to the questions: How can you support that? Has it been proven? Where is your reference?

For example why the vision should include people of the company? Can I reference EFQM on that? I am trying to write things that I have originally thought of that but which is my ground basis? I have to support that or else I am thinking that I cannot support it. I think there is no basis for it….... So I decided to do it in MBE way which I strongly like…It is our way it is our philosophy…….
This is where knowledge comes and plays fundamental role……….It guides us it shows us the way and help us built our own work………. We have learnt to think like that……. We have changed and we have changed a lot……….. This is what MBE has provided us for our future career a different mentality…… A scientific basis which could be applied in real world with incredible outcomes…………………….

Yes there is nothing most important:

Be guided by theory………….. There is no substitute for knowledge

Denationalization. . . . . A myth that will never become reality. . .. .

Economists are arguing if it is better companies belong to the state or to private interests. . . On one hand right-political thinkers support liberalization on the other hand socialists support a more controlled by the state economy. . . I was thinking of that debate, because they are asking from the Greek government to sell some of its property. I am speaking with a lot of people that have different arguments on this topic. Personally I find both sides' arguments valid and I cannot argue back. My “God” this is a contrast…………..

So what is the problem? Why both sides seem to have right arguments? I was thinking of it this morning. I see everything through the eyes of Deming's SoPK and this made me to come to a conclusion for this problem. It doesn't matter if a company belongs to the state or to private interests. If the style of management is the current one the same bad results will be a reality. It is an illusion that under a private interest a company has better results. This is because there is fear. As we know managing by fear will have short term gains but in long term there will be a disaster. . . . . It is again that the best efforts will not bring an outcome if you do not know what you have to do.

I cannot find any other solution in that conflict and I would be glad to hear arguments about it because I think it is a debate that play fundamental role in our life.

The problem is that economists and financial people, who apparently are ruling the world, do not see the cause of the problem. And as Deming himself have said to Americans in 1980s' “In that country management has destroyed its people” and this is in my eyes the problem of the world. On one hand in public interest companies, people are not utilized and are inefficient on the other hand in  private interest companies, people have a short term efficient period but in long term they become less efficient than the ones in the public sector. Furthermore in order the private interest to enhance its efficiency it starts firing its people and hiring others. Then we have what Deming called mobility of management which destroys the system as a whole……………

Change the management system starting from the top and going down in my eyes is the only way to get “Out of the crisis”…………..

Knowledge culture…………. Eliminate fear………

Knowledge culture is regarded as the culture that anyone feels free to share and utilize knowledge…………. What I realized is that leadership plays fundamental role on that. More specifically eliminating fear and allow people feel proud of what they do is important. In addition taking risks and not be afraid for punishment in case of a mistake allow employees learn more and faster.

I correlated that with schools. I do not know why. Probably because I have linked schools with the process of learning. Ok it is not like that in the schools but is should be. So which are the cases? On one hand there are teachers that act as traditional teachers punishing, using scores as assessment method etc. On the other hand there are teachers that are acting as coacher or mentors to the kids and using scores for feedback by utilizing the power of self-assessment as well. . . .(It is like MBE vs other masters).

SO what do we choose for our organization? I searched for that in net and came across a research that took place in a school. It was proved that students that felt less stress and received a mentoring leadership style from their teachers, were able to learn more and faster………………

TPM in my room……

Some of our obligations after MBE are to listen and continually teach the others. (Set an example and help those to overcome the past are the other two: P).

Yesterday I had a dialogue with the responsible for maintenance in my accommodation. The problem is that when I came to my room the hand basin had  a problem. There is an iron stick which was screwed in the main part of the faucet for controlling the water (warm cold, power of the flow, etc) . . . ... However this due to the water getting there was broke down so it couldn¢t screw. . . . . . .

So I asked yesterday if they have this problem with the rest of the rooms. He answered me that most of the rooms have this problem this is why we by cheap faucets so that we can replace the broken part with low cost.

After that I thought of TPM………….. I proposed to him to establish a policy that directly when water gets into that part of the faucet the student is obliged to clean it. . . In that way the life of the part will be increased since the problem comes from the water that stays in that specific part for a long period…………………. ;)

The three principles of autonomous maintenance should be possessed my every one of us and applied in our daily life. It is a way of thinking and acting. Yes and this is what we have also to teach in the employees that will be working with us. Responsibility for the place in which we are working. ..... . J

It is again something that started from Japan and has its philosophical basis…………

Knowledge surprise………………

Knowledge surprise………………

A lot of people support that if you do not know something you cannot measure it………. I always had a problem in that phrase. Of course it is important to have measurements but my question is that “can we measure everything?

” I do not think so. While I was working in KM I thought how someone can measure knowledge? Can you ask how many knowledge do we have and get an answer of 20 cm or 50 kg? Nope. Back in Greece we say that someone possess a lot of kg of knowledge if he/she is clever but it is slang and it is for fun. How do you measure people feelings? Today I have 30 kg of sadness. Nope Thus I do not think that everything can be measured. .. . . . . . . .

It is again that the most important figures are unknown and unknowable. 

Thus the quote of the day is:

It is wrong to suppose that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it – a costly myth (Deming the new economics).

It is a great lesson that when we go out there for work not be based on what we can measure but in what we cannot…………………

Knowledge, Wisdom, Gnosticism.. . Understanding Knowledge.. The philosophical movement…

Knowledge – Wisdom - Gnosticism….. . . .. . . The philosophical movement…..

Well they say that there is one difference between languages all over the world and the Greek one. It is believed that the Greek language does not describe the things but explains them. . . . Thus I searched for the routes of Knowledge so that I can understand it. So this is the story:

The Greek word for Knowledge is “Gnosis”. In ancient Greece there was a philosophical movement which was called “Gnosticism”. It still exists but it is totally different from what Greeks believed to be.

Gnostics who were people that believed in Gnosticism supported that God didn?t created the world but a community of his own descendants that were called centuries or in Greeks “Aiones”. However one of them didn?t like what was going on there and started a revolution. So one of the centuries apostatized. This century was called wisdom or else in Greeks “Sofia”

Thus wisdom fell and separated by the community of Gods and have born an ancestor. However this ancestor was considered as bad since it was born outside the initial community of Gods. This ancestor in turn born his own ancestors and created the world that we live in. From that action he was called creator and his ancestors called rulers of the world. However the rulers didn?t like the wisdom since it was one of the initial gods and put her in prison inside the human bodies………………………….

There is the meaning. Wisdom which didn?t like what the initial Gods-centuries did is in every one of us. However it is captured in a bad materialistic world in which rulers prevail. Thus it is when we understand the problems of that world and gain the necessary “gnosis”-knowledge that will allow us to transcend in another space-dimension. Only then we will be able to understand what life is about and improve the system that we live in. Gnostics believed that it is tacit knowledge that will bear wisdom and will save our spirit. They supported a simple life in which love prevails and people despise the materialistic goods of that world.

All these benefits come only by one thing which is called Knowledge………… After this philosophical movement religions destroyed it. For example Christians supported that people should acquire knowledge however they provided 10 “rules” to govern the world. . . . . Ancient Greeks didn?t believe in rules but on that every one of us through knowledge will understand the limits of its own freedom and will set them in that level that doesn?t affect the limits of the other?s freedom. It is a self-assessment philosophy……………. And I think that the rest of the religions have rules as well. I am not sure about Buddhism (which personally I would like to learn about). . . . .

Well this is the story of Knowledge……………. Are we ready to gain? Or we afraid to do so. . . . . Gaining knowledge provides power but also is difficult………… It has a lot of pain to conquer and manage ideas that all the other people will probably consider as irrational…….. J

The power of Knowledge.. I think I understood what critical thinking in our works is

I am almost ready to have the first KBAM complete file so that I can send the outline for feed forward. . . . Reflecting back to what happened I realized that knowledge is powerful. The point is that I am planning to add a little bit knowledge management in my project thus I spend before KBAM more than 100 hours for studying the soft perspective of KM in SMEs (organization culture, structure, people, etc…….). Consequently I used some of this material in my PMA…………

However when I looked back in the PMA as well as in the project the common parts is totally different………. I used the same references but the outcome was different….. In my eyes that is amazing and clearly reveals the power of knowledge. . . . . It also reminded me what Deming has said in SoPK “Information is not Knowledge, knowledge requires theory”. Again this guy was right.. . . :P

Also I think that this is what the tutors expect from us when they say this mysterious critical thinking and writing. It is nothing more or nothing less than taking the info in the journals books or conference papers and adding your theory to create knowledge in respect to the problem you are solving. . . . .

At the end of the day PMAs Projects Universities and I may say everything is Knowledge Management………………………………

May 09, 2011

Why KBAM is so difficult…………… Are we going ever understand Knowledge?

I was thinking why KBAM PMA (the module as well) is so difficult..... . .Anyone who has started this PMA will probably agree with the statement that KBAM is the most difficult PMA we ever have done until now. . . But the question is why?

My first explanation is that it combines all the topics that we have covered since now. This makes it complex. Yap Knowledge is everywhere.

Also, it combines two huge topics which you should study a lot to have an idea what they are talking about. Personally I have chosen Maintenance (probably one of the worst choices of my life: D) which is huge. TPM RCM strategic maintenance preventive maintenance traditional maintenance. Such a lot of approaches that you have to consider and justify why you have chosen the one you have chosen.

However I strongly believe that it is knowledge that makes it so hard. Even the asset management part we see it through the Knowledge perspective. Regarding KM all of us understand that it is something that cannot be determined since Knowledge will never stop evolving. . .. . . . Personally I think that you cannot understand what knowledge is and what power it may have. The best you can say is that there is no substitute for it and identify its benefits. However the human kind will never understand the whole potentialities of knowledge. . Knowledge is so unstable. So unknowable so mysterious. .. .

It is personal belief I would admire some challenge on thatJ.

May 07, 2011

RDM following us in KBAM…….

The day had come after studying KM I started KBAM. The first thing was to choose which will be the asset management that I will focus.... ………

How you do that there are so many. . . . I preferred not to search for them and see which the most info has so that I can choose based on that. I was afraid that this will introduce bias. Thus I made a grid analysis……….. J

Interest in Learning for asset

Previous Knowledge for the asset (the less the higher score)

Relevance with the project

Utilization in further career

Interest created in presentation

Facilities Management

Resource Utilization

And this is how I chosen Maintenance. However the most important factor for me was if I had previous knowledge for the topic. If I hadn¢t I add higher score because it is what you learn and not the goal……… And I wanted to choose maintenance because I had no idea about it…………. J

It is a grid analysis with MBE philosophy………………………..

May 06, 2011

Japanese TPM can save is really a cost effective approach……

I am studying about maintenance and more specifically I like the idea of TPM which I am going to use in my PMA…..

Despite the different definitions that were given to TPM from Japanese and Western world, TPM seem to have a unique philosophy in which everyone in the organization is involved in the maintenance program. It is the idea of localization that makes it so great. . . . . It is based on groups of people for developing a maintenance program and increases the performance of equipment. It reminded me the quality cycles of Kaizen.

Is Kaizen the hurt of Japanese philosophy? Provided that the first thing that Deming taught them is PDCA I think so. . . Everything derives from it like TPM. Is TPM a child of Deming? I think yes...

In my mind came the amount of money that a company can save by implementing a TPM program. . . . . . . Few maintenance people because the operators will take some maintenance responsibility. In that way people can be utilized in different positions. Less breakdowns of the machine. . . . Better coordination of the employees as well as higher motivation . .... .

I definitely going to implement something like that in real life since in my eyes seems like something more than efficient and clever…..
