Grrrrrrrrrrrr

I'd forgotten just how utterly infuriatingly madding shout swear and curse those who created it rage induction experience it can be to use Microsoft Outlook Web Access Light. Then I clicked sent on something I'd had the audacity to spend more than 15 minutes composing and instead of it being sent, or saved or anything remotely useful happening, I was presented with the login screen and what I'd typed was lost for ever. Not because of of any sort of transitory error but because that's it's default behaviour. (And no, clicking the browser's back button doesn't help, that just gets you to the login screen again, even though that's not where it should logically take you.)

It was forty years ago today,

I remember when I was young there was a book on the landing bookshelf about the Moon landings. It was maybe a sort illustrated guide, I remember a lot of big pictures and diagrams. I don't remember any more detail than that but I do remember being fascinated by it. I must look for it next time I'm at the parent's house.

It took about four years from the first time a man made object orbited the plant until the first time a person did it. It took a mere eight years after that for a person to walk on the moon. That was forty years ago. Forty years is very long time in terms of technology and yet, the last time a person walked on the moon was before I was born, thirty six and a half years ago, 7th December 1972. I hope we don't have to wait that long for it to happen again.

My eyes are dim, I cannot see…

...properly as it turns out I have stigmatism I can no longer adequately compensate for without help. This is what I've learnt today after taking advantage of the scheme where by the University will pay for you to have an eye test if you frequently use a VDU and even give you money off glasses if you need them. (Yes, VDU. That's what it says on the web page and on the voucher. It is a perfectly accurate term, but I can't help thinking it was last commonly used in the 1970s to refer to something akin to the side of a fishbowl that's only capable of displaying one colour which would be green, or possibly amber. I remember it being used in material for my GCSE Computer Studies course circa 1991 as part of such taxing questions as "Which of these is an output device? Light pen, Keyboard, VDU, Magnetic tape"  and thinking it sounded old fashioned even then. Pong was probably developed by people who used VDUs.)

So apparently one is supposed to be able to actually discern most of the letters on one of those eye test charts as opposed to still being several lines from the bottom and saying 'Um... H? N? M? It's one of those isn't it? And the next one is one of the round ones, like an O or a Q, or maybe a C, right?' I can still see perfectly well for the most part and I don't actually need glasses. It's just that an optician has suggested that I might find wearing glasses beneficial for activities where I use my eyes a lot. Like typing this, or reading, or watching TV, or looking at things. That sort of stuff. And I now have a prescription. Which is really very mild as such things go. The numbers on my housemate's prescription are much higher in every area and he manages to live an independent lifestyle with the aid of his spectacles so I guess I'll be OK for the foreseeable future. (Which I should be able to see much clearer once I pick up my glasses on Friday.)

Joking aside, it has come as a rather unpleasant surprise. Still, there are much worse things to be diagnosed with than mildly misshapen eyeballs.

Could we not just make direct threats? No? Ok, this will have to do then.

Kaspersky advert

Kaspersky. Because without us, bad, bad things will happen to your family. Especially the little girl.

Add application launcher to GNOME panel script

Google bait since I found myself needing to do this and couldn't find an example anywhere and had to use my brain instead. I hate it when that happens.

#!/bin/bash

# script to add a new application launcher to a GNOME panel

# first define a new object that describes what you want to add
# name of new object.
objectname=object_99
newobjectkey=/apps/panel/objects/${objectname}
# set the type of the object
gconftool-2 --type string --set ${newobjectkey}/object_type "launcher-object"
# set were the .desktop file can be found
gconftool-2 --type string --set ${newobjectkey}/launcher_location "/usr/share/applications/MozillaFirefox.desktop"
# number of pixels from the left side of the screen that you want the launcher
# to appear. if you want to define the position from the right set boolean value
# panel_right_stick to true
gconftool-2 --type int --set ${newobjectkey}/position 500
# which panel the object appears on. look at /apps/panel/toplevels/
# using gconf-editor to get list of valid values for your set up.
gconftool-2 --type string --set ${newobjectkey}/toplevel_id "panel_0"

panelobjectlistkey=/apps/panel/general/object_id_list
# get the list of objects currently on panels
currentlist=$(gconftool-2 --get $panelobjectlistkey)
# add your new object to list.
gconftool-2 --type list --list-type string --set $panelobjectlistkey "${currentlist/\]/,${objectname}]}"

Just discovered they've ditched the Microsoft Windows only nonsense and are now using Adobe Flash to stream stuff. Which is nice. No commericals either. Wonder how they manage that. Apparently Charlie Brooker now has a quiz show on E4.

….how?

Writing about web page http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3ic3a4730761c7eaf6aac2de4e28ef8e67

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids."

For those unfamilar with the video game in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroids_(video_game)

I really can't image how anyone could possibly make a film adaptation of that.
