Reflection on PMA

Inventroy management is an interest topic, the basic working principle incldes MRP and JIT system. JIT work well in a repretitive environment, MRP suits for product line manfacturing. For the most SMEs, JIT system is a better choice.

In my personal life, I don't have many experience in organizational inventory management, but everyone is invtory controller at home, we need to manger our food, cloths and other things. a good storgage can makes life easier and increase the quality of life. For example, we can put fruit in the icebox to extend expriation date. the place put in right place could reduce damge. JIT system is I only buy the food when I needed, it means I can eat more fresh food. MRP system is buy lagre amount of food from super market, and keep enough reserve for a week. In china, my life style is much like JIT system. But I use MRP system in the UK.

Reflection on the course

Knowledge-based asset management is a very interest topic, we know the importance of asset for a company, Knowledge also is one of the primary asset. During the module, we have a lot of free time to self-study, this is also part of knowledge management, we should learn how to manage the asset efficiently. the culture of organization could decide the efficent of management, knowledge sharing culture could really help us.

Nowadays, we can gather information quicker than ever before, but the challenge is how to extract the knowledge from the huge volume of information. In my experiencel, the possible solution is from big data abalysis, this is the part of my project research. The intelligent of using knowledge helps to reach excellence.


Reflection on security managment

There are the number of main topic in the Asset mangement, including Facilities management, security, health and safety and environmental management. Nowadays, the security issues has risen apparently, especiallyi in vitual aspect.

In the physical side, the security problems can casue a huge amount of loss, such as stolen and physical damage, but the virtual security troubles can cost more. Nowadays, the most of organizations adopts informaion system to increase the working efficiency, the high vaule of information becomes the target of hackers.

Normally, the security issues cannot aware before the problem has occured, it is means the security should refer to prevent, include, risk avoidance, risk reduction, risk sperding and risk acceptence.

I have done the elective course in warehouse management. the contingency plan is very important to any company. we cannot avoid the risk absoutly, but we need to consider the solution after we are sufferfing the troubles. For example, we can outsource the production activities when the machine is not able to work.

Personal Knowledge management

Knowledge is an improtant asset for company, it could be divided in to human capital(invidual level), social capital(relational level) and sturctural capital(organizational level). many enablers could impact the efficient of knowledge management, including organizational culture, leadership and relationships.

There are many benefits from KM. the decision making process could be faster and better, to avoid make same mistake twice, and to achieve exist experience and expertise, provide better customer service.

In my opinion, Knowledge management also could benefit for individuals, people are continous to learn new knowledge, but the exist knokledge will not handling well if we not use for long time, for example, I was really good at geometry when I was studing in high school, but I cannot solve the question if I did not review the principle of geometry. I think the area of improve my personal knoweldge management is do the reflection everyday, to make the reflection converting to my lifestyle, spend 5 mintnitue to do reflection when I am ready to sleep. the time makes me feel more comfortable.


Knowledge transform from tacit to expicit

Knowledge management is a porcesse to generate, store,distribute and apply the organizational knowledge. In the process, a first challenge is how to gathering knowlege, people always are not willing to express their mind, which is a subconscious protection for themselves. In the concept, the most organization know the importance of sharing knowledge, but the problems is the difficult in pratice, there are many barriers, such as behaviours, trait and potential dangerous.

Pick the point from the coures and my personal experience, blog entry is a advanced way to share our knowledge to others, but I only write the blog when the moudle is requriing. The suitation is blog entry is a kind of course task rather than a life style. Blog is a open world , I will think other's reflection before I publishe the blog, even we are in the safe environment. In addition, Facebook and other softwares are good way to share our knowledge. Acutally, even social software is more faisonable life style, but the most of us spending too much time to read the fragmentation of information.

Knowledge and asset management

Knowing the principles of asset management and knowledge managemnt is very important for any company. Managing your asset effeciently means low wastage and reduced cost. Throughout the groupwork , i have learnt a lot about its principles and benefits. This allowed me to see some opportunities in my work place, where the basic guildlines of asset management are applied, yet could be improved more. Also, knowledge management is the proccess of capturing, sharing, evaluating knowledge which include people and IT systems. I saw how important is the knowledge management is and now i really appreciate what my company is doing to improve its knowledge management systems. Have i known these principles before, i could have suggested some of the techniques i know by now. KM and AM have many advantages and benefits that companies should value in order to gain the most of them and link them with the guildlines that EFQM has would increas these results and values .

situation awareness

Situation awareness is one of the important factor to consider in organizations context. I have not known that it is a science and there are many studies about it. Being aware of what’s around you is the basic definition of it. Being aware about what’s going on you and being able to interpret and anticipate things. Knowing the process of situation awareness and knowing the errors and factors related to it is very essential for mangers so that they know how to tackle the problems in the work place. How to find the proper solutions. Knowing the principles associated with situation awareness would help in diagnosing the current problems and finding proper solutions. When I think about these factors, I go back and think what if I have done what I have done in different way. What could have happened? My duty to take these principles to my work place and make the others aware of the various factors and errors. It is always useful to ask myself or other to ask themselves before taking any decisions the question of what if. It opens your mind to things that you might not thought about them at the first place. Also, knowing that they are different stages and different errors in situation awareness help in applying the exact cure to them and the organizations know what tools to use to overcome them.

Leadership PMA refelection

Leadership is interets topic, it exist in everywhere. there are baisc component in the leadership, including leadership is a process, leadership involves influence, leadership occurs in group context and leadership involves goal attainment. During PMA whriting, I have done a lot of researsh on the leaderhsip theory. some theory is selected to use in the coaching section. Trait in leadership are some special qualtiy which individual can born with them, including drive, the desire to leade, honesty and integrit, self confidence, cognitive ability and knowleder of business. someone could be seen as leader when they are born. I think everyone has trait, it has provided paper standard against which individual can access their own leadership quality. Path-goal theory is able to explain how leaders motivate subordinates to be productive and satified with their work. there is a improvement form the Contingency Theory in somehow. I think Path-Goal offers prdictions for how leader's style conncets with follower's needs and the work. Our strategy in Wave Rider is that Expanding business to Europe country, evevy department should support this strategy. I think CEO and managers have different focus. CEO need provide more supportive, manager focus on real operation procress. leadership style should change based on the team member and the goal of work.

Leadership PMA

One thing I learnt from the PMA process is that you should allow some time for peer review. I mean making someone else to check your work for certain tasks such as grammar mistakes and content is really helpful. It gives u the chance to see your work from different perspective. So, any task I do in the future, I would try to get others point of view on it. In addition, there are certain things that I should keep on mind. One is that be aware of any changes on the original ideas the comments might have. Second, the person who is committing is professional in what he or she is doing.

I am always now allowing some time to review the work myself even if I finished my work earlier, so i have enough time to improve it.

WaveRider Case study reflection

In this section, our group have done a lot of effort on it. We follows the step of decision making, including define the problem, evluate alternative and implment the chosen outcome. In the first step, we have done market research, The goal of WaveRider want to release a new product which called SeaCatch. the company need to make two decision, including producing place and advertising method. The market research shows there is decliened trend in the uk market size. Based on UK government report, there is a decreasing trend in the number of fishermens and vessel since 2004. In this suitation, we use decision tree to help us get a rich picture of the decision making. other tools also have been used.

In the location decision making, our team decide to use SMART, risk analysis and AHP. those tool helps to evluate both quantify and qualified factors, the result shows lymington is better choice to us. For marketing, we used AHP and grid analysis. The result shows internet and TV is the highest ranking. Our group think the most inportant is traget focus, due to the small market size. and most industry is in closed area. In somecase fishermen may not use internet, so flyer can cover the area cannot covere.

Robust Decision Making (group work week)

When you get in analysing real data, there are many things to keep in mind. During our group decision, I have learnt many things. First, I learnt that in decision making process, you should set up boundaries and focus on the main objective you have. All tools you use later and thoughts should be linked to this objective and limited to these boundaries. Also, during the group decision, we went so far identifying the criteria to consider in analysing the location and market. As a result, sometimes we were lost and sometimes we were unsure of what we are doing. Later, we put some boundaries and we thought based on those limitations, which helped us to focus more on the subject. Also, having a group work helps in generating thoughts very quickly. Besides, it helps you think about the situations from various angles. Moreover, I learnt that in order to make the decision robust, decision makers should use multi decision tools and do not rely only on one tool. The numbers of tools are up the group to decide. So, if the group are ok with five, then we use five. Use the tools until you are satisfied with the results you have got. Robust in not only about a current decision you take, but also, future outcomes and sustainability of these outcomes. The more we make the decision robust, the more sustainable it is. Finally, use the tool that suits the situation you are facing. Using the wrong tool for the wrong decision making process makes you weak decision and biased outcomes. Also, decision makers should keep in mind the weakness each tool has and put the proper actions to overcome them.

Objectives limit your thoughts and make you focused on the target.

Robust Decision Making

This week, the Robust decision making has started. there are several types of decision maker based on personality, including Exervtor, Introvert, Senser, User of Intuition, Judge, User of Perception, Thinker and Feeler. Among the personality type, it is not only to stick on one features, the change comes from age, situation and experience. In company perspective, decision making could be divided into three basic types, involving Operational, Emergency/Urgent and Strategic. Operational decision making refers to basic operating function of company, such as allocating employes working responsibility and handling customer complaints; strategic decision making relates a medium to long term business plan, such as a marketing research for luanching a new product and improveing the producitivity of producing process in next year. Emergency decisions is more compatiable than others, the option need to be made in a very short time with limiting information and knowledge. It is improtant to notice that bias lead to negative influences while person or team is making a decision. In order to make appropriate judgement, understanding and avoiding bias are necessary. The bia could be from the avaliability heurstic(based on ease of recall, memory structure), representivness heurstic(based on misuderstanding of stastic) and anchoring and adjustment heurstic(based on first impression override sound judgement). For the sake of averting bias, I think scientific techniques help to make right decisions. There are variours tools and methods which assist building robust decisions, such as AHP, decision tree analysis and risk analysis etc. In my opinion, robust decision making is very improtant in everywhere, people need to konw how to make good decision, what bias could impact judgement and which scientific tool is the most suitable the suitation. a good decision is able to enhance the performance of company and people life.

still more to learn

While investigating the various theories of leadership, I have noticed that there are many similarities. They have somehow the same concept. Yet, what really I admired from the reading I did is that it opened my mind to the different perspectives of leadership. I concluded that a mix of these theories should be practiced and thought about. For example, we can get some principles from the transformational theory, where it suggests that leaders should have the ability to inspire and lead toward a shared direction or goal. Also, we can mix it with the principles of organic leadership approach, where it promotes a shared culture and the vision is owned by all the leaders and the followers. The point here that I am trying to mention it that leaders should consider the different approaches of leadership and try to mix them together in order to be able to lead organizations with taking into consideration all the aspects of leadership.


Rubost decision making – in module learning

i did not know how much bad our decisions were, or how much errors and problems were in the decisions i made until the lecture about judgment. I learnt there are many problems and baises associated with the decisions we take. Failing to recognize these baises may lead companies to make bad decisons and evenually lose competetive advantage they might have. The aim of studying these problems is to be aware of them and minimize as much we can the baises we have in our daily decisons . All these problems are related to the fact that we tend to use our system 1 thinking, which is our concious thinking , dealing with the situation based on a preprogramed set or a past experience. Also, the aim of this lecture is to understand when to use system 2 thinking and when not to use it. To make it clear, some of these problems are the problems such as imagining things that are not there, following a particular patterns that you think it should be like that but it is not, creating false frames , etc ... Addressing these problems and overcoming them is very critical for taking the right decisions with less errors in business. To overcome these problems , there are various tools to help decision makers in that. Ranging from the classical methods to the Computerized methods. All these methods differ in use based on the situation and the problem the one is facing. For example, if the problem concerns about risks , then the suitable method would be risk analysis , or if the problem requires a simulation to be done , then the simulation method could be suitable.

Look at every situation from all sides and evaluate it based on rational thinking, consider all alternatives, and then take a decisions using various available tools.

Leadership and Excellence reflection

Leadership is abour motivate people, but it is not that easy to achieve. There is many types of leaderships, such as coaching, visionary and democratic etc. We have experineced the various leaderships styles in the course exercises. The leadership style really depends on the suitation. For example, Coaching suites for helping team member to improve performance or to develop long term strength. On the hotel exercise, we have change leader during the project is running, It is challeneg for both team leader and team member. At the start, we have good perfomance. After three quaters, leader is changed, there is risk from change of team, but we overcome the problem, leader understand the suitation and keep the team working as before. If the team works efficiency before, the new manager should follow the team working style. If there is bad perforamcne ,I think leader shuoud create a support enironment and unlock the creativity of team, which encourage people to improve.


coaching as a leader

I think one of the most important skills that leaders should have is the coaching skill. I don’t mean coaching as it is well-known, especially in sports. The coaching we have studied is the opposite concept of the coaching I already know. What I know about coaching is managing a team and provides them with the necessary solutions in order to overcome all the obstacles they face. However, the new concept of coaching we learnt this week, is the process of helping a coachee to overcome a problem, by making him or her figure out what the solution is, not providing the solution by yourself as a coacher. I think coaching can make the leadership process more professional. it gives the leader the chance to have an overview of the situation before jumping into conclusions. It also removes any dependency on the leaders in terms of problem-solving and making the employees have the confidence to solve their own employees.


Stop solving other problems and taking life on your shoulder. Only then you can really live your life and enjoy.


Leadership challenge

This is final simulation of leadership and excellence, The challenge is that the information is only avaliable from leader, leader need to distribute work to every team member based on the task. During the task, there is a lot of infomation coming together in short time, leader should distribute tasks to suited people and evulating the ability while they is doing the work. Leader has to face failure and to motivate people. We will give feedback after every tasks, we can only improve when we recieve and accept the benefits that feedback offers. I have learn a effective team should be cohesive, a shared vision and clear object can help to buil. In real life, leader is the most challenge role, wihch has to take responsibility to make team improve and growth, effective leader need to encourage the heart.

CSR

AS referring to today presentation, we have done the concept of CSR and the CSR strategy deploys to selected company. CSR is very important for evey comany, it could be add more value in to brand. A statement is "doing good is good for business." a sustantained company has to take social responsibility, no one will to buy bad company product. For example, If a company pollute the environment, the social commitment will censure and resulting in nagative effects which refelct in the comany performance finally. In real business, to depoly CSR is not easy task, many organization not really concern it in action, even they have the rule of principle. I think it is because CSR can bring huge mount of potential benefit, but the most people just focus on what they can get in short term. Form the moring excerise, we have practice team excerise in Salvage in Black Swan. It is a interest exserice, even we have not find right solution. In leadership asepct, The problem is how to make team work in effective way. there are a lot of information comes together, a good team should divide the task bsaed on the people skills. leader should asscess team member ability during the task and to encourage memebr while memebrs finding difficult in the work.

Reflection today

There is statement very impress me, "Treat others should treat same as yourself." In a company, If manager didn't give any opportunities to peoplr for furture improving, then the manager should think is he want suffer same treatment. For the learning aspect, knowledge shoud be embedded yourself, konwledge is part of youself.

In the coaching processe, the instrution is: 1, Process rapoort; 2, describe the issue; 3,Develop strategies/Alternative; 4, narrow to an apporach 5, Gain commitment. In is important to notice that: 1. Why is a power word, to make people automatic defense; 2, Never give advice, the advice will give direction of solution, the coaching is a supportive process. Don't give example for your experience.

In real pratice, it is not easy to coach other, the Why is easy to ask people, coaching need to generate people's own solution, smart question is requried.


leadership thoughts

When you think about leadership, you think is an easy concept, but once you practice it, you know it is real hard. The hardness is not in understanding the concepts around leadership, but in the effective implementation of these concept. which style you apply based on the given situation. should I be democratic or autocratic? should you be involved or step back? The ability to evaluate the situation effectively and act based on that, is what determines a good leader.

Also, an important concept to apply in the leadership context, is that making your people solves their own problems, and not providing them with the direct solutions. your role should be only leading them toward the answer, providing them with the tools, and without interference.

The winning strategy exercise

Being a leader makes you feel under pressure and that the success of the team is only on you. Although this is what i felt inside myself, my team members thought i am not under pressure, which i think i managed well.

There are couple of things i personaly thought i did not do, but my team members thought the opposite, which makes me think again and try to be fair when assessing myself.

Many things i should be focusing on next when leading:

1- creating a clear goal and direction for the team.

2- setting the ground rules at the beginnning.

3- feedbacking for all the opinions that are presented.

There is no leadership fit for all suitation, leader has to find out their own leadship style to suit different teams. From the exercrise "winning the strategy", TJ is team leader, he is a effective leader,

1. He distrubuted the work at start, everone know what shoud do in the group

2. After reading the paper, everyone discuss together, TJ accepts others idea and finding out solutions

3. He is an energy man, passion also improtant, it is easier to impact others

The leadership's behaviours also proved from definition. In my opinion, effective leader has to at least take one or more elements:

1. There is a force to influenc other, and it is a positive impact

2. Good relationship with other people

3. A clear goad and finding out direction to achieve

4. Voluntary effort and commitment over and above compliance

5. effetive commnitction with others

6. More flexible, different leadership style within different suitation


Leadership and Excellence Introduction

Leadership is a very interested topic, and there is no aggreed definition in effective leader or not. leadership exists in everywhere, everyone agrees Hilter is a effective leader, but he is not a "good" leader. There is a difference between effective leader and good leader. The topic relates either effective or ineffective leader. Many element could make leader to success. such as good communication, clear vision and mission and talent. leadership is not an entity, it is able to influence others through personal charisma. In my opinion, a good team must has an effective leader. leader creates shared vision, finding out direction where to go and a clear mind guide how to achieve. Leader has to know people and helping them to improve continuously.
