Poorly-thought out junctions aside, cycle tracks are also of absolutely no use in the snow, as I have just discovered on one of my more exciting commutes. Interestingly, some of the hail that fell yesterday looks astonishingly similar to salt.

Mucky, slippery, icy, broken pavement with parked cars on it instead of nice, clean gritted road? I don't think so!

  2. Yes cyclists should not be under any pressure to use them. See link

In icy conditions you are usually better off on the carriageway – also white lines to divide the pedestrians from the cyclists can be very slippery when wet.
