I am a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick. I am also a research fellow at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham, and the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace, Stanford University. My research is on Russian and international economic history; I am interested in economic aspects of bureaucracy, dictatorship, defence, and warfare. My most recent book is Guns and Rubles: The Defense Industry in the Stalinist State (Yale University Press, 2008).
