Our good friend Julie Boden, ex-Birmingham poet laureate, is holding an event which looks exciting. See details below:

“From Delft to Bluebeard’s Castle”
Oasis Café Theatre is delighted to present an evening of paintings, poetry and music.
Julie Boden (poetry), Natasha Godfrey (poetry and song), Brian Lewis (poetry), Jan Wild (paintings) and Milton Godfrey (guitar).
Friday 8th July 2005
at the Orange Studio (2nd Floor), Cannon Street, Birmingham, B2 5EP
Bar open at 6.30pm. Performances from 7.30 – 9pm. Buffet at 8.pm (subject to demand, see below)
The Event
Both Julie Boden and Jan Wild have been inspired by Bartok’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle. Julie performs her sonnet sequence, ‘Bluebeard’s Wife’ (and launches the book), with projections of Jan’s paintings. Brian Lewis took himself off to Delft and the resulting sonnet sequence, ‘Delft’ (and the book of the same name), is inspired by the art and culture of the city. It will be accompanied by projections of paintings of various Dutch ‘schools’. Natasha Godfrey is a multifaceted performer who steps out as a spoken word artist. She will perform from her collection ‘Mind the Gap’ and, accompanied by Milton Godfrey on guitar, will sing the blues.
The Tickets
Tickets for this Oasis Café Theatre event are free but we’d be pleased if they could be reserved by emailing or calling 0800 079 0909.
The Buffet
We would like to offer a Studio Summer Buffet during the evening. The cost will be £8. If you would like a buffet, please e-mail hazel.preece@orangestudio.co.uk by July 1st. We’ll then email to confirm if we are able to provide one or not.
A Short Essay on Oasis Café Theatre
Oasis Café Theatre was started by Julie Boden, Birmingham’s Poet Laureate 2002/03. The Orange Birmingham Book Festival and the Orange Studio help make it happen. Various good friends give assistance. Artists give their time and talents and audiences give their warmth and approval. There are interesting conversations in the bar afterwards. Often other arts events are planned and some deals are done. To be honest, there’s a good crowd of people and its fun. That’s why we do it.
Well done, Zoe – very loyal of you to advertise!!

Yes!! But the project is very interesting. Julie encouraged a number of women writers in the area (including me) to meet up and have a mini writing conference. We are all writing poems in response to the opera, Bluebeard. I'm taking a Mexican slant on the story – La Malinche(Dona Marina) and Cortez and the Spanish conquest. I read a wonderful book called The Open Veins of Latin America which was a real inspiration. I'll post what I have done so far once it is a little more finished.
