 Reading comprehension
In this part, students could get enough questions to do group work. Randomly, the group work can be carried out through one to one, or more than 2. Students can use discussion, find reference, all kinds of strategies to solve these questions. Students totally control this activity. Actually, in this stage, students should construct by themselves and reshape their own knowledge and understand. As teachers, they could not always go with the students. When students try to use what they have learnt to communicate, we can not always be there to wait for help. So train students to be effective and independent learners of language is the main goal of this part.

 Text discourse
Put it here, not like the former one is in the front of reading comprehension, because I take this stage as a comment of the above part. Students could find the correct answers to the above questions by themselves during the time. The classroom communication is shared by teacher and students. Teacher provides all the necessary information and explanation, and at the same time, students give feedback.

 Role-play
The topic of the role-play is told to the student in the last class, so students have enough time to do good preparation. Students could complete this activity in groups, pairs or individually depending on the given conditions. If we use metaphor to describe the relationship between teacher and students now, they are just like audience and actors. Of course, audience always have evaluation. Here is also. For example, do their performance is suited for the social circumstance and how to improve it and make it better.

 Homework
It seems that the class will stop at here. Give the role-play topic for next class, and the grammar practice in the text. Sometimes we must care about the education system in this country. Personally speaking, I believe the grammatical competence is the base of all.

I think, after the mending of the former plan, students could easier to attach the aim of communicative competence. And during this assignment, I use a typical lesson in my personal context as an example to understand the conception of communicative competence. It is a new experience to me, and I enjoy it.

Communicative Competence

Since it trends to be a common term in English Language Teaching, applied linguistics have all kinds of editions to describe its definition. It seems a milestone, which stands for a movement from the rules of grammar, towards the ability to use language.

Faech, C., Haastrup, K. and Phillipson, R. (1984) wrote on Learner Language and Language Learning, communicative competence has the following components:
phonology/orthography, grammar, lexis, pragmatics, discourse, communication strategies and fluency. All these components can be divided into the following groups.

Phonology/orthography, grammar, lexis all these rules of language form refer to as linguistic competence which seems as the core part in the former English Language Teaching. Now we cut down its reputation never to say it is not important as before, however, it still the basic level to reach communicative competence.

Leave linguistic competence, it seems we couldn’t talk about the pragmatic and discourse knowledge. So, we use the term pragmatic competence to call the combination of the above three parts. It accounts for the speakers’ abilities to use the wide range of vocabulary, grammar, etc appropriately in particular social circumstances or professional context.

Strategic competence, actually, means to use all kinds of tactics to keep interaction going. It is better to use the strategic competence to fill the gap in communication when the linguistic and pragmatic competences don’t work well. Actually, when the two works well, and speaker also has a high capacity of strategic competence, it is quite sure that the communication will be more lively and brilliant.

Different from strategic competence, fluency, actually, need speaker reach a good command of linguistic and pragmatic competence. There is a misunderstand that clearly expressing the meaning has already attained the aim of communication. Fluency is superimposed on the level of communication. However, according to the tolerance test, the poor fluency will impede the communication.

Next edition is from Canale and Swain (1980). It is widely said that communicative competence is made up of four parts: grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence and strategic competence. Grammatical competence has the same effect with the linguistic competence, which is focus on the literal meaning of communication. Sociolinguistic competence is the capacity to match the register to the situation. It seems that many communication failures happened by foreign language learners which keep the language with the status, role, attitude, purpose, degree of formality, social convention and so on properly. Discourse competence refers to the ability to link and make the suitable interaction in a coherent way. Pragmatic competence seems the combination of the there competence: grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence and discourse competence. The same with Faech, C., Haastrup, K. and Phillipson, R. (1984), strategic competence, use the strategies to make effective communication, both verbally and non-verbally.

Homework

Context

Actually, before I went into Middle school to begin to learn English following our national education system, I attended a pre-session program in my primary school during the summer vocation. The same as the teaching methods which the teachers use in the following years, I enjoy the short very much, according to my memory. On one side maybe this is the first approach to a foreign language, on the other hand, frankly speaking, I like that teacher’s voice. Until now, the sweet sound and a marvellous language, sometimes, still come into my dream. Middle school, senior high school, everyday, we did the same thing in the class. Teacher leaded us read the vocabulary, then analysed the text and explained the grammar points. However, after class, each day, we did the same homework. Cope the new words until remember them, do the exercise books one by one until get a pleased mark. Of course, this the level of a “good” student. You also can not do the countless questions and not remember the endless new words. In fact, we only have 10% senior school graduates having the chance to enter Universities. Fortunately, I am the 10%. And unfortunately, I still be here to have dealing with infinite words and grammars. College life is quite more interesting compared with the former studies. To an English major, exactly, business English major, we face more courses related to English. We have Intensive English, Extensive English, Grammar, Translation, Oral English, Writing for Special Purpose, and so on. Actually, to many courses, we followed the way which we are quite familiar with in high school and senior high school, even the textbook, it seems the same format. Only seldom courses, such as Oral English, our students could have more chances to exhibit ourselves in the class. However, during the four years, we also had some teachers who would like to change the oral English class to listening practice. Here I do not want to say the teacher-centred environment is not good. But should we care about the scale of the teacher-centred, when we put it in the second language education. Just like, everyone could see and know the way from Beijing to London in a map, however, not everyone could find the right way when they begin to walk. Luckily, after my graduation, our college introduced me to work in a training school as a teacher of English and secretary. This short experience, I think, gave me a lot. This training school is the biggest one in the city of Kaifeng, Henan Province, China. It provides all levels of English courses to people who have different aims. For instance, Christ English to Young Learners, we usually provide to children from 3 to 12 years old; Cambridge Young Learners English, the students may better in age group of 6–12; Oxford English, the best choice is also the students in primary school. We have 4 levels of New Concepts English to secondary school students or to adults who have the appropriate level, the same as Look Ahead series. We also have some special trainings to people who would like to promote their oral English, to people who would like to pass some examinations, for example, TOFEL, IELTS, our national English test CET-4, CET-6, and so on, and to groups who would like to give a short time specific English training to their employees.

Happy National Day!

Today it is our National Day! In China, from today, we will have a seven-day holiday. Think of my friends having their happy holidays now, i feel as happy as them! Actually, it is not the truth!
Today, at the early morning, it seems a lovely day. However, now, it changes his face! I will hand in my choice of options before 12 o'clock. I still do not make up my mind should i choose The Grammar of English or Spoke English? This makes me headache! Maybe later i will have an idea or make a choice at the last mins. Who knows?!
I also invite Jingjing to my flat to have dinner today. We will have a wonderful night i think!

Happy Mid–autumn Day!

Yesterday is mid-autumn day. at 2pm, i called my mother. she was preparing to sleep. this was the first time i called my mum after i arrived in Coventry. like all the mothers in the world, my dear mum said a lot about having a good health and studing well. actually i would like to listen to my mum's saying, esp. from such a long distance! Then i called my bf. he is still at his office to play games! i wondered why games were so important to man. it is a pity i haven't seen the moon in mid-autumn in britain. because i went to bed at 7pm. don't worry i still have chance, actually. see you next year, mid-autumn!

second day in celte

Today is my second day in CELTE, and i met my personal tutor actually.
We will begin our courses in next week, so this week we just make ourselves be familiar with CELTE, with the University of Warwick, with Coventry. In my group, there are six girls. We are in a female world. Oh, sorry tutor, i forget you, such a kind and humourous gentleman.
I will go back to read my OPTION HANDOUT carefully. See you !
