Lao Tsu's leadership

Follow-up to Confucius¡¦ leadership from Julia's blog

The wicked leader is he who the people despise.

The good leader is he who the people revere.

The great leader is he who the people say, 'We did it ourselves.'

  2. Hey Julia,

    Just adding to your overview of leadship, I’ve realised that despite many of the famous interpretations on Leadership being different, all despite their agree that a leader is an individual whom is able to translate emotions into positive action, and unify the energy availble inorder to feed it in to a vision.
    This can be exemplified by the following:

    “A leader shapes and shares a vision which gives point to the work of others.”
    - Charles Handy

    “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.”
    - Ray Kroc

    “Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument,
    debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.”
    - Colin Powell

    “Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the
    odds against them.”
    - Robert Jarvik

    “The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind in others the conviction and will to
    carry on.”
    - Walter Lippman

    “Leadership is not a person or a position. It is a complex moral relationship between
    people, based on trust, obligation, commitment, emotion, and a shared vision of the
    good.”
    - Joanne Ciulla

    “True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not the enrichment of the
    leaders.”
    - Robert Townsend

  4. Hello Wajid,

    Sorry, I should have explained more in details…

    The worse kind of leader is when followers do not trust him probably because of his questionable integrity;
    A better leader is that followers respect and praise him because people know they are following by a good leader who is ethical and/or equipped with expertise;
    However, the utopia leader in Lao Tzu’s mind is that people barely know he exists. In other words, the leader sees through his followers, motivates and empowers them to do things spontaneously without the orders. So, the followers would say, “We did it ourselves.” Isn’t it an almighty influence on people whom have not sensed a bit that they have been changed?
