Poetry: The Desiring "I" Workshop

Writing about web page

One section of the symposium, ‘Women Writing Rape’ on the 28th April 2007 was a creative writing workshop run by Zoë Brigley. Zoë drew on a talk by Vicki Bertram at the recent conference, British and Irish Contemporary Poetry. In her talk, Bertram suggested that woman writers feel anxiety about or actually avoid writing in the lyric “I”. She cites Sarah Maguire who suggests that the ‘fiction of a desiring I’ is difficult for women and that it contradicts a certain kind of conventional femininity.
