Coventry Refugee Centre

The Coventry Refugee Centre is offering volunteering opportunities for those who can commit a morning/afternoon a week to offer advice and support to refugees in Coventry.

CRC and Warwick Volunteers (WV) are holding an introductory meeting on Wednesday of Week 9 at 5.30pm. A brief introduction will be followed by short talks from existing Warwick volunteers at the CRC.

Coventry Refugee Centre needs volunteers to assist with the following areas of work:-

  • Case work
  • Interpreting
  • Befriending
  • Reception
  • Administration and help with particular events.

The Warwick Pro Bono scheme, however, will mainly focus on recruiting volunteers for the asylum team for the position of volunteer caseworker.

Training
The scheme offers an extensive training scheme over 6 training sessions. No prior experience is needed, merely a commitment to work with and support refugees.

Commitment
Volunteers should note that this scheme requires a weekly commitment. This would involve volunteering for 4 hours per week.

This project is ideal for students who:

  • Study Refugee and Asylum Law (or who have a genuine interest in asylum issues)
  • Are committed, enthusiastic and well organised.
  • Can work well in a team.
  • Have good communication skills including telephone and written skills.

Volunteering for the CRC is a very rewarding experience and an excellent placement for those seeking a career in the sector. Volunteers will learn invaluable skills, meet a diversity of people and make a difference!

If you want to find out more about the project, come along to the meeting on Wednesday 23rd November at 5.30pm in room R0.12, or visit the web-site:
