Nasa learns . . . . . Decision of correction or tempering?

Nasa cancelled the launch of Endeavour and the reason was some problems with heating materials. All of us remember the experience of Challenger. . . .However it seems that in the case of Endeavour the phenomenon of groupthink didn¢t occur. . . .

That clearly in my eyes shoes a mentality of learning by mistakes. Personally I think that NASA when it comes to a decision for launching or not is really aware of the phenomenon of heating materials.

The question here is that, based on the previous mistake organizations are aware of the process in which the mistake took place more than previously. Can this lead to tempering with the process?? ? As Deming says tempering probably will make the process worst. OK in case of NASA where we speak about human lives and equipment of billions you need more that 6sigma quality so tempering is difficult to occur because of the tight limits.

Although in real organization I think this happens. At the beginning definitely there will be the need for improvement but if management is obsessed they will face common variation as special. . This could lead in bad decisions that will make the system worse. . . .

Thus a decision that was based on previous mistakes can lead in worse mistakes. Here in my eyes is a good example for why we should be guided by theory.


Good decisions may are not always welcomed . …..... . . Bad decisions may be.

This contradiction was developed in my mind. On one hand decisions that may offer improvement in a system might face resistance while bad decisions might be welcomed.

In my eyes this attributed to resistance to change on behalf of those that react. However the question is how we manage those reactions.

Some journals say persuade people to come with you by making them understand the need for change. Then we go in the area of change management. However it is sometimes that you have to take a decision and may see the unhappiness of your employee at the same time that you take it. . . . . I have done it when I was working. Despite it proved to be a good decision I felt terrible when I saw the employee sad. . . . . . Maybe a good way is to coach the employee and try to create arise the decision through dialogue. . . . However this in my eyes requires a lot of skills which definitely we do not posses. We may need more \ experience for that and of course more knowledge. .

Is there a connection with leadership . . . .? ? I do not know.... . . . .    But definitely we are not going to be always joyful for the others. .... LLL

I hope that I will not face a lot of those types of situations. . . . .

Knowledge management in organizations

I am going through the literature review and I found something interesting about KM. KM should have a strategic approach. I couldn¢t realize that before I went through this literature. KM strategy should enhance and facilitate the overall strategy of an organization.

In my eyes this is now clear. Provided that organizations have a specific strategy with specific goals KM is the underpin infrastructure that will make available the necessary knowledge each time for taking the right decision and lead. IN EFQM this is depicted by the fact that excellent organizations should provide their leaders with the necessary information so that they can take decisions.

Thus alignment of KM strategy with the overall strategy and provide this relevant data. Can you imagine tomorrow as a leader having to take decisions regarding how you can introduce a new product in the market and the KM system provides you with the list of the supermarket. Something is wrong with that. . . . . . . Thus strategy which will determine the culture the structure as well as the processes within a system in respect to Knowledge is absolutely necessary.

Probably this is why most of organizations have abandon KM projects. Probably they thought that KM is only infrastructure and powerful information and communication systems.


Application of RDM interactions between the alternatives of a decision. . . . .

The academic year come to the end. Most of us have OPP which is our last module and then project (GoDdy help us :P). Yesterday I was planning my next steps. The problem was that I have two PMAs (one and a half be more precise) and one module left. Also, I have to finish my literature review before 10 of 23 of next month so that I can send it to my supervisor for revision.

Provided all these problems I had to decide how I should work up to 23 of May which is OPP module. However despite the fact I work 10 hours per day (it is a disaster I am going to sue WMG for thatJ) the hours wasn¢t enough.

More Knowledge in respect of Knowledge management. Improved PMA as well

Provided this simple analysis I choose the second choice. Thus I stopped working on Knowledge PMA and started doing my rest of literature review of project which refers to Knowledge management in SMEs. In that way I could develop synergy so that I save some timeJ.

It seems logical but I am wondering if we had the ability to go through that logic before RDM module. The Knowledge comes outside the system and every module such as RDM provided us knowledge that was outside our organization-system.

However the point is that each alternative should not be investigated in isolation. Interactions among them could develop new information that could be useful in our decisions. Did we take into consideration the interactions among the two factories when we choose in the in module work?????? Some yes, some no……

Benefits from the MBE Knowledge community

Today I had the first chat with proof. Jeff in respect of the idea for creating a Knowledge Community for MBE students. While it was in abstract level some good first thoughts were created. . . .

Is all that important? I am studying Knowledge management right now. My question is that:

“Why Deming called it System of Profound Knowledge” The most important philosophy at least in the area of management and business is something which name includes the word Knowledge. Also, it includes Knowledge as one of each part and without it nothing in that theory could work. . . . .

We have established a Wiki as a trial version so that we can develop ideas regarding the entire concept. My expectations are really high. All my motivation derives from the fact that MBE changed as by providing us “Knowledge” however if we take the master and leave it we really do not believe in what we learnt. Is like saying yeah that is all now work. However Excellence is a journey not a destination. Thus I consider fundamental to support our journey to excellence in terms of Knowledge.

I strongly believe that everyone will be benefited. We will be able to take more robust decisions. As Paul said me today what organizations do is that when we have a problem try to solve it with knowledge that there is internally in the company. However most of the times this knowledge is not enough. If it was enough probably there would be no problem at all. . . . . . It is our chance to create a community that will give us external knowledge so that we can take more robust decisions and manage our companies . ....Being better leaders because at the end of the day the captain of the ship looks at the sea and the stars so that it can say where the ship should go. . . . .. . .

Plagiarism and Knowledge. . . . . .

Some people are what they are without deserving it. . . . I will never blame the people that never had the chance. It is not their fault. However I will blame the people that had the power and not only did nothing but also made the system worse.

Provided that Knowledge is, at least in my eyes the most important thing in the world, I think that people who uses it for their benefit can be very dangerous. . . . . Academics are responsible for the systems problems for various reasons. One of them is that they really do not care about the Knowledge. They see the academic “chair” as their possession and really do not care about the students that most of the times really want to learn. . . . . I strongly believe what is going to change the world is knowledge. . .

Because as Deming said “lack of Knowledge. . . . That is the problem”

I am studying Knowledge management in depth for my project and I came across two journals which made me think of all these. The crappy system is ready to suicide and reborn by his dead body as pure. We as people that possess knowledge we will change it. Believe in yourself without forgetting that your self is part of and consists of all the fellows.

The loss of Knowledge. . . . . . .

A lot of authors have pointed out the importance of Knowledge and consequently Knowledge Management in organization. What seemed in my eyes interesting is that most of the authors point out the problem of loss of Knowledge when employees abandon the company or fired.

First of all generally I am against the mobility of managers or employs. In my eyes this creates disastrous effects. However in the current system this mobility is a reality for various reasons that exceed the scope of that blog.

So the importance of keeping knowledge safe, since Knowledge is something possessed by people is important. I remember something that happened in my previous company. The company had a designer who designed all the products that the company's products. He was the only one who knew how to do it and how to use the software design systems. However one morning he decided to leave the company without saying anything. He took with him all the data as well. In that way the company was left with no data and none to know how to design. Since the process was too complicate someone had to be trained by specialists in that field. . . . . The training cost 12000 Euros which is a considerable amount of money for a small Greek company. . . . . Add the cost of time that the company stayed without a designer. .. .Add the data that was lost. . . . . It was a disaster for that company. . . .

However in my eyes the fault was not of the person that left but of management. Management should have predicted something like that. Also I cannot understand why such a core process in that company should be understandable only by one person. . . . . . Why Knowledge management didn't take place. . . .

However this is why we are here. We learn so that we can avoid problems. We gain knowledge. . . .The power of knowledge. . . .

Lessons learned by RDM structure

It is time for RDM PMA and everyone is working on that. As usual the informal communication links took place and MBE students started sharing information. . . . By the way this is not cheating it is called Knowledge management….. J

However RDM has something special. . . . Each PMA is based 100 percent in the in module work. This made me think the interrelation of choices. If someone chose to go for a lot of tools in the in-module work there is a lot and difficult work to do. On the contrary if someone was more controlled now the work is easier.

Is it a point that our decisions not only affect the current situation but also our long term tasks and goal? All of us knew the type of PMA. Who of us have thought of the PMA when was having the in module task . . . . . ?

Good lesson learned I think . .....

The power of knowledge and the decision responsibility. . . . . .

Well back in Greece happened something really bad that made me think of our two last modules KBAM and RDM.

The story is that someone from the City group has sent an email to Greek bankers that the Greek government is going to restructure the Greek debt during this weekend. Our great and clever bankers sent around this mail through web. The outcome was that the Greek stock market went through a mini-crash.

First in my mind came the power of knowledge. A mail with some information which by the way where invalid as well so it was not supposed to have so much power, it is able to create a crash in a country¢s exchange market. It is amazing.

However in my mind came ethics. Who the hell is that bastard (sorry for that but i am really upset. . . ) that played with a country¢s economy? There are people back there that have no food in their table. People that asking for money. Unemployment has been increased, it is a disaster.

Then I thought of the responsibility of our decisions. These Greek bankers that proliferated this message should be punished as well. Their decision to proliferate the message was irrational. Also, this has happened again and the Greek government has warned that next time there will be punishment to everyone that will contribute. Now they have to face the responsibility of their decision.

In my eyes there should be a hard punishment to the one that has created this message. Let make him to live as Greek people who are striving to find food. It is not funny to playing with them.

Personally I think that the global economy just sustain a little bit more. There is the need for a system transformation. And governments around the world should understand that people that have nothing to lose are capable for everything.

PS: City Group has bet a lot of money in favor of Greece's economic collapse. Trust me they will loose a lot of money. Greece is changing. . . . .

Poor judgment in a TV game . . . Short term thinking

I was watching a TV game called something like the weakest link. In that game a team answers question and earns money. In case of wrong question no money are gained. So at the end of each round the team members vote for the worst player and he/she just abandon the game.

The problem is that four three consecutive rounds there was a player who had zero wrong answers. The same player in the fourth round had the worst performance. So the team members voted against him. Is that judgment correct? I do not think so. If he was the best player for three rounds and only in one the worst the probabilities to have a good round in the next turn are high.

In my mind came the idea that our judgments should not only based in what is happening now but look for data over a time. Is the same problem with the financial people. The take the last two year figures of the income for example and create a trend. . . . . . Can we assume that the process is in statistical control? (I love variation)J.

All these lead to short term thinking. . . . . The economic problem of our society.
