When Philosophy meets Management we have excellence

Today's lecture was fantastic. We spoke about the module (CBE) and all the procedure that we are going to face in order to be assessed. Although this is our goal (to be assessed and take good score), the most important thing is that we have learnt about some crucial values of excellence¢s philosophy.

First of all we saw a video of the man that began this philosophy in Japan after the World War II. Definitely Prof. William Edwards Deming is the “father” of excellence. All the philosophy of excellence, or else TQM (Total Quality Management), was based on his ideas and intelligence. In my opinion, among all that theories of Deming, the most important is the theory of PDCA cycle. The process is:


                                                                  Plan   -->    Do -->   Check --> Act

(That is the best i can do to display the cycle....Just imagine it as a cycle)

Someone who will see that he will probably say: “Ok it is just simply a plan that everyone can implement in his job, not a big deal”. In that case, he has missed the point. The “magic” is that it is cycle. First you plan then you do what you have planned, after that you check the results of your action, and at the end you act according to the results so that you will improve the process. Thereafter, you start from the beginning. For example:

  • I plan to cook (plan)
  • I cook (do)
  • I taste (check)
  • Next time I will cook it with less salt (Act)

The magnificence of this philosophy is that it can be implemented not only in the production line of a product but also in our daily life (cooking)…..

These assume an unstoppable procedure of always being better. As Paul said today, it is a continual improvement procedure. Always learn always being better. Anyone should assess himself / herself and reacting in order to correct his/her faults.

This theory can be implemented in workforce too. Managers (assuming that they possess the knowledge) have to learn to their employees that they should self assessed and improving their attitude. Changing mentality is the key. On the contrary we see managers shouting all the time and creating terrible working conditions. This has as a result workers feeling unhappy in their jobs and being unproductive. In my point of view this kind of leader is “dead”. Respect for the other people will offer the desirable results. That is mainly efficiency and effectiveness for the business and good salaries for people working there.

To conclude with I would like to cite a phrase of a Great Greek Philosopher which according to my humble opinion is the most important phrase that have ever been said. His name was (or I probably have to say is because people like him never die) Heraclitus and he has said:

“Everything flows, nothing remains still”……..

Knowledge change, people change, the environment change………Why we have to be still?????

  1. Im definitely agree with ‘changing mentality is the key point’ in workforce Vagelis!
    In my previous company, i had on the job training as head of sales area for 7 months. Through this experience i have learned how to changed the mentality of my sales team, but i must acknowledged that it was totally difficult at the beginning because they usually did every things separately. However, when I tried to aligned the responsibilities (Plan) and drive them to take an initiative & action (Do) as well as did market visit together (check), i felt that the level of motivation increased and they value them self better because we worked as a team and shared the respects among us. Ah, almost forgot for the (Act), we had morning & afternoon briefing to make sure every things did well based on our plan and discussed the next action. Hope we can implement the PDCA cycle well throughout our time in MBE B4 team :)
