Has the kids’ sport coach an important role in their ethical development?


To answer this question, we have to understand that this is addressed to kids that practice some individual or team sport. And the personal development concept is going to be discussed in base of the vision of the Philosopher Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg. He describes the ethical development in three stages.

The first is that human behavior is driven by simplistic concerns, wich provide immediate benefits to the person. The second stage is that a person’s behavior is constrained by their interpretation of social norms and their desire to be perceived as a good person. This can be described as a follow-the-rules approach. And the last stage, points that the behavior tends to be concerned with the relationship of the individual to society (Rodney, NN).

We are going to understand the ethical development like the second stage described by Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg. The principal reason is that because it samples the interpretation of social norms. Something that people learn in their childhood, in other words, since their earliest days of life. So, this is something that are in the hands of all people that teach kids, and have a relation with them. Like parents, school teachers, sport coaches, babysitters, and others.

In my personal experience. I was scout leader for the youngest group of girls of this movement, with whom I spent a lot of time in camps and saturdays' activities. My partners and I were in charge of teaching technical skills for camp, games and a lot of values that supported what this institution brings to their lifes.

When you are in charge of kids you have to be very carefull of the words you use and how you behave. Because you are a leader for them.

Now, I want to discuss the specific role that answers the title question. The role of sports coaches in the life and development of kids. Coaches may have some significant role to play as ethical guides in the lives of young athletes (Feezell, 2014). That is because, like Feezell said in his book “Coach as Sage”: “Coaches do have special relationships with players, as teachers, not quite parents, and friends of a sort. Players may appropriately turn to coaches for advice about matters outside of the coach’s craft”.

They form a relationship of trust. Kids feel confidence in them, and the coach’s opinion is important not only in the sport development, but also in personal development.

With this in mind, the answer of the initial question is: of course they have an important role in the ethical development of the kids that they are training. But, what do they really teach? Are rules as important in the match as in personal life?

For support my opinion. I researched about the values that sports give to kids. An article of the newspaper “El Español” talks about the values that the sports provide to kids. It identifies and stands out the compromise, work-team, responsibility, effort, self-knowledge, perseverance, coexistence, obedience and self-care. So, that is what they teach, not only technical skills and tactics for the sport.

I also remember what we talked about in lecture 6. Specifically, the story we read about the last game of the under-11 football league, and the interaction between Pete the coach, Jack and his father.

In summary, the story is about the difference in instructions given by the father to the kid, and the coach to the team. Jack’s father said that he had to forget about the rest of the team, because in that way he could make part the English team for the next year. Also, and if he scored one goal, he is going to buy a new bike. On the other hand, the coach instructed that he had to pass the ball and be in contact with all the team.

For kids, the difference in instructions between two people that they follow (in this case, the father and the coach) makes them a self-conflict. For the coach going against the opinion of parents is a very difficult task. Because he can’t say that parents are wrong, or they don’t have to listen when they are in the field.

Pete said to Jack’s father: “I’m sorry you don’t agree with my coaching. But for me, at the age of 11, the most important outcome is the development of the player. That means in training sessions we practice football tactics and technical skills; likewise the respect for the rest of the team, the opposite team and, of course, referees and coaches”.

The values that coaches teach are something that are going to influence all next actions and life aspects of the kids. This is something that parents have to have clear too, but this is another discussion.

Coaches of young people have to remember all the time that they are educating people, people who then are going to grow and replicate what they learned since the first lesson.

BLOG WEEK 5: Is likely that sport in the future will see reduction in sex segregation?

Along the history, generally we can see that women have limited opportunities and a different perception of their gender by the male, for example in education, politics and violence, the women have to fight for their rights and demonstrate the equality to the opposite sex.

Specifically, if we talk about their participation in the sports. All of it started only for men with specifically qualities. They were called “Normal” people, to the people who were heterosexual males with able-bodied and white skin. The “Other” people are the opposite of normal and they started to participate many years after that (Ryall, 2016). If we remember the Olympics Games begun in 716 b.C. in Greece and the participation of women appeared in the Olympics Games in Paris in 1900 (De Villa, 2015). So, for many years sports were exclusive for men.

Is this the reason why the teams or the world cups are denominated without sex if we talk about men sports? Is a good theory. For a better understanding, for example if we talk about the England men’s football team we say “The England football team” and if we talk about the same team but from women people say “England ladies football team”, true or false. It doesn’t justify the discrimination in basic things like the name of the team.

Is true that both sex doesn’t has the same capacities, some gender are better than the other in different kinds of things, for example, men are more stronger than women, and women have more flexibility than men. Even so, it doesn’t means that the other gender can’t do the same sport or practise it to improve their capacities and most important, enjoy it.

To answer the question of the title. Is important to know some arguments for sex segregated, all of the arguments that I am presenting was developed by Tännsjó. In the book “Philosophy of Sport: Key Questions” by Emily Ryall. He said that sports has categorizes between sex to make the competition good and fair; for protect both sex to violent outbursts; to showcase different feminine values and allow women chance of winning as unsegregated sport would be dominated by men (Ryall, 2016).

What you think when you read it? Something that people have to understand is that there are biologically differences between both sexes, we can’t compare the speed of a woman with a man, because their bodies are different, for the function that each one has, and what they provide to their species. A woman has the capacity to be pregnant and her body has the qualities for that. So, biologically her body has different attributes.

Like we saw in the lecture, now so many sports has both categorizes of sexes, for example synchronized swimming is a sport that started only for women because biologically this sex have more aptitudes to this than the other. And we also saw that both sexes could participate in the same categorize. Like the participation of the best player of the American football ladies team in men’s training of the same sport.

This kind of things demonstrate that we are having advances in the topic, the culture are understanding that the physically differences between both sex doesn’t means that we have to categorized in gender. If someone like training specific sports and to challenge the present stigma throughout the history of the humanity it is fine.

The sex segregation is reducing increasingly, that’s a very good point, but we don’t have to forget that biologically both sexes are different and categorize them between sexes or weight is not bad to do a good competition. If you want to training without this categorize is ok. You decide the place that make you feel comfortable.

Blog Week 3: Is every movement expression accepted by the global society?

 

For start, is important to know the meaning of movement. This is a change in place, position, or posture in relation to the environment. Movement happens only when different body systems, such as the skeletal system, cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system, and the body’s energy systems, work together. To move successfully, these systems interact and adapt to a constantly changing environment (Human Movement, nn).

To understand what it is, we have to begin with the importance of the body and what you can demonstrate with it. Philosophers believe the body as any material object is with our perception. Its basic properties are the size, mass and impenetrability (TIM, 2012). Specifically, Lucretius defined: “Our body is the envelope of the soul, which, in turn, is the guardian and protector”. For every discipline, the body represents something different, in class we talked about different perspectives of students and the relevance that the body has in their careers. Then how it affects movement. Some of the ideas that came up were that the movement is available to transmit ideas, change the state of something and it could be different or static.

If we try to see the movement by different perspectives. We could imagine the use that you can give to it. For example, in business, the movement is like the body language, you transmit a lot with the movement of your body, like security, nervousness and these kind of things that affect your negotiations.

People have different skills and facilities to do types of movements, for example people like to dance, and other like to do yoga, and it depends on what you like and what you enjoy to practice.

With this in mind, everybody moves differently and have different kind of expressions. Throughout history, men and woman were developed different kinds of sports, basically because there were disciplines only for male or only for female. This is explicitly expressed in the British movie “Billy Elliot”. Produced by Greg Brenman on 2000 and based on 1984, when the movement was very marked to a gender. Billy’s father expected a masculine movement of his son, because he thought that it was something related to gender. But Billy liked ballet and wants to been a good dancer. To made it, the film show us that the preparation, training, and be concentrated is the base to did the best development of the discipline. You have to discipline your body, such models clearly need to fulfil the following functions: comparing and improving techniques, developing technique training, and aiding communication. As there is no such thing as a general optimal performance model, we have already noted that any such ‘model’ must be individual-specific (Bartlett, 2007). This is what Billy had to do, mostly in private to not be judged by society.

The question is: Has this changed? Now, Can people move and express themselves in the way they want? In my own experience, I practice football, a sport that at the beginning was considered a “men sport”. Now it is changing, this sports is taking a lot of force by women. There are a lot of football leagues for women and it is becoming more normal to the society. Not only in South America, where I come from, also here and in other parts of the world.

People now have more liberty to expression. We can see it in the different sports, and how it have more relevance. If we look the Olympic Games, we note that in the past there was only for men and sports that are denominated “men sports” like running and other traditional sports. Now, there are 41 sports with the participation of women and men (Olympic.org, 2017).

BLENDING SPORT WITH CULTURE AND EDUCATION, OLYMPISM SEEKS TO CREATE A WAY OF LIFE BASED ON THE JOY FOUND IN EFFORT, THE EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF GOOD EXAMPLE AND RESPECT FOR UNIVERSAL FUNDAMENTAL ETHICAL PRINCIPLES. People are fighting for equality and their rights, not only in this topic, also in politics, economics and different kind of things. So in that way, we can conclude that people are working for liberty of expression and the equal access to it. The World Organizations have to be part of this change and accept it, like the National Olympic Committees, the UN, and nation’s governments.
