Dropping out of School increases AIDS

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200412200068.html

This is an interesting article showing how dropping out of school is relating to AIDS for children in Africa. The odds are doubled for children to get AIDS when they drop out of school. The children are losing their parents because of the disease and are dropping out to either work or be abandoned. It is a shame that these children are in a deadly cycle that is going to continue for many years to come because of how HIV can take several years to develop into AIDS.

A boy whipped to death

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200411160797.html

This article tells of Zambia now banning corporal punishment in all schools. A boy was whipped to death last year by his teacher. Are you kidding me? I am in shock that a teacher would have the outright anger that they would beat a child to the point of death. 40 whips minus one with the cat n tails might be a safer punishment than what was used by these teachers. The article described uses and reasons for punishment. "Generations of students were routinely beaten in the name of discipline: thrashed with hippopotamus tails (known as sjamboks), whipped with canes, kicked, slapped and pinched for misbehaviour, poor results, being late, missing school, wearing a dirty or torn uniform – and sometimes for no reason at all."
It's hard to believe this. I'm glad that they are stopping this type of treatment though it is a true tragedy that a death and countless other examples of horrible treatment had to bring change. I can say I received corporal punishment when I went through primary school never, ever, was it a whipping that would have caused more than little soreness. I have complete sympathy for the children and families affected by this.

Oil Companies helping communities

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200411050802.html

The ChevronTexaco oil company donated over 100 hundred books to the University Library in Angola. This is great Chevron did this though I would hope they would be able to give more considering the size of company they are. Hopefully with this donation, other companies that are in Angola will seek to give and help out by giving students more books to access.

Leaving children behind?

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200411050677.html

At this primary school, there is talk of adding more students. They want to allow students who are at a lower english speaking level in. Parents of children already in the school do not want this because the pupil to teacher ratio will rise from 33:1 to 45:1. This is difficult for teachers to handle as it makes it difficult for one on one interaction with students. So what should they do? How do you accomodate for a growth in students? Will they be able to get more teachers? These are questions that are being addressed in this situation.

Writing about web page http://web7.infotrac.galegroup.com/itw/infomark/418/717/53444081w7/purl=rc1_TTDA_0_CS252242485&dyn=4!xrn_1_0_CS252242485&hst_1?sw_aep=warwick

This article comes from The Times in 1902. In it, the writer is discussing how the teaching of history needs to be implemented into the South African education. He sees that bringing history into the higher education system, this will cause it to spread throughout the country where everyone would want to begin studying it.

Complications in educating about AIDS/HIV

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200410180388.html

This article is saying that they are having trouble educating adults because of cultural traditions. This is interesting considering the other article is showing that the gala they are having is successful. There seems to be a contradiction or its the fact that they are working with different areas of Zimbabwe which could very well be possible. The more rural areas are difficult to educate while those is more modernized sectors of the country may be more open to learning and not following all traditions exactly.

A different way of Sex Education

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200410190572.html

This article talks of sex education for AIDS and HIV in a different manner than the other. Instead of trying to go and inform just adult females about prevention, they are starting early by informing children in the school system. The other article said that they were having difficulty with getting information to make a difference because of cultural differences but this article showed that this gala they are having is helping to inform the adult women. Having the gala is something that seems to beneficial for all ages as it involves the entire community.

This article tells of the government giving money to fund 17 laptop computers and printers to an area in the Cape Flats of South Africa. The hope of the government that more areas not able to have this kind of technology will be getting it soon. This is going to help improve these students knowledge of the world as well better chance of succeeding in life.

Sex Education in Zimbabwe

Writing about web page http://allafrica.com/stories/200410180388.html

In this article, groups are having trouble giving education on safe sex practices. Because of cultural beliefs women cannot talk of sex with their spouses who may have HIV or AIDS and this gives reason why the spread of the disease is rampant in many areas.
