My secret shame

Time to confess a secret shame.

Last night I finally loaded a country album onto the iPod.

Now, I know a lot of people don't rate country one bit, and for 95% of it I would have to agree (Achy Breaky Pelvis for example, ugh).

However, and stick with me on this, there is a brand of country that can be just mind blowingly wonderful – in this instance I am refering to the two Gram Parsons albums GP and Grievous Angel. If there is anyone who doubts that country can do this go listen to Return of the Grievous Angel or $1000 Wedding. Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris were at their peak.

Oh, and if you need another argument for why some country is fantastic, how about:

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash".

Damn it The The

I'd forgotten just how damn depressing most The The tracks are – if you think the Smiths are depressing just go listen to The Twighlight Hour from Soul Mining – ooh that just puts me in the wrong mood.

Next up, Waterfall by the Stone Roses – aah, that's much better thankyou…

Andy Williams must be pissed

Caught some crap on the Beeb on saturday night, a Swing revival show.

Two things struck me – firstly it was nice how the beeb forgot to mention the real attraction of swing to many people these days – the gambling, whoreing, infidelity, drugs, drink, mafia connections, associated violence, racism and all the rest – I am sure Robbie Williams loves swing for the music and not the lifestyle.

Secondly, how pissed off must Andy Williams be – one of the more successful crooners of his era – to be down the bill, beaten to the big lights by that minor irritant Tony "please go away" Christie – Amarillo Shmamrillo. I am sure Andy loved that.

Enough with the Swing, Abbatastic, 70s flashback crap shows – actually, maybe I'll just go to the pub instead…
