I've been mulling this one over for a while now.
Since I became an iPod owner I have transferred most of my CDs to iTunes and iPod. My CD collection is now largely redundant other than as a back up. They still take up lots of space though.
I currently have: A Cambridge A5 Amp in black, Panasonic Technics CD player (forget which model), two speakers, speaker stands and lots of cable.
However, the CD player is largely not used anymore. The amp and speakers sound great but take up a lot of space. The amp is used mainly with the iPod and the DVD player.
So I have looked at the Monitor Audio iDeck as a replacement. Has anyone used one of these? What's the sound quality like?
Simple question really.
Went to see Martha Wainwright on Friday – really good night. She has a pretty unique voice and some great material. Evening was particularly interesting as she was joined by her mum – Kate McGarrigle.
However, the songs deal with a lot of ishoos and questions of positive/negative self–image.
So, anyway, the question i was pondering over the weekend was whether people generally like themselves or don't.
I feel fairly comfortable as me – but I get the feeling that I may be in a minority.

Technorati turned this up today:

I've been cracking on with a few things today and have the shut the world out (World Shut Your Mouth anyone?) by listening to the ArchDrude Julian Cope most of the day.
I've also recently been re–reading the Head On / Repossesed books by the Odinistic Floored Genius. Surely one of the greatest pieces of music writing ever committed to cheap paper.
The Peggy Suicide/Jehovahkill tour was about as good as it gets for me – 3 hours of insane brilliance.
Oh well, just thought I'd mention it in lieu of a fag break…

Writing about web page https://skypecasts.skype.com/skypecasts/home
Tried my first skypecast on Friday evening. Interesting service that lets you set up teleconferences through a skype connection.
I connected to a US skypecast and the quality was pretty good – better than the old teleconferences I used to get on at Marconi anyway.
The associated Chat and control functions worked very well.
Unfortunately my Router kept dropping out so eventually I bailed out rather than annoy everyone with constant reconnections.
I am unsure if the drop–outs related to:
1. A crap router
2. My ISP going – oh, that's skype traffic – kill kill kill
3. The thunderstorm going overhead at the time
I will try again for the next call on friday and see if it is any better.
In the meantime I thought it was a pretty cool service. In my head I have an idea that we could trial:
1. Student Recruitment casts – open call to ask questions about UG/PG recruitment
2. Experts and Press Releases – schedule calls for journalists/other interested parties for relevant stories
3. Research–TV – get the academic online after a video is released to answer questions
Anyway, not sure if skype user numbers warrant further attention, would need to check demographic etc, but interesting none the less.

I am trying to cut down my coffee intake to just 1 a day – I have been drinking far too much of the stuff.
I have had one coffee in three days now and I assume that my tiredness, irritability and headache relate to this fact. I hope this ends soon.
I am glad I never smoked as giving up things is a real bummer.
My rationale for this – partly health related but I also want to make coffee something special again. Like many good things too much of it reduces the specialness. Coffee, like wine, should be appreciated rather than thrown back. So fewer but better is the mantra.

You have to love the Apple lawyer who said:
that "even a moron in a hurry" could distinguish between the computer company's online music business and a record label like Apple Corps.
Implying therefore that Apple Music was full of Morons – I don't think there was an objection to this statement!
Give that lawyer his fee.

As a nice little coda to my earlier post I got a call from a journalist today who wants to use one of the Warwick Podcasts as part of a package of material he is producing for their publication.
This is great for a few reasons – firstly it was a request to use the original content, not edited or rebranded – we must be doing something right then! Secondly it shows that Journalists are catching on to the new PR/Comms tools and that we are right to be supplying content in this way.
I also did some fag packet maths – 1250 downloads at around 20 minutes each is 25,000 minutes of Warwick content served.

With the help of Chris May we moved Warwick Podcasts onto a new distribution page which has made publishing a lot easier. The other major benefit is that we can now get much clearer stats on usage than before.
As we have just passed the first full week of the new system I am rather interested to see how it worked out.

That's 1250 downloads in a week (bank holiday week too!).
I am really surprised at some of the numbers for older releases – the Google search terms shows that we do hang around in Google for quite a while.
Another nice part to this is that 90% of listeners are off campus, which is what I would have hoped.
Sadly, and I guess this is the usual podcast problem, we have no numbers on how many people actually listen to the things.
I now just hope that Chris May doesn't point out some obvious flaw in the data!
