What would you sing on X Factor

I was musing on the way in this morning about why you tend to hear the same old guff on X-Factor week in week out.

I mean, in the 40 minutes I travelled to work this morning my iPod served up a wide selection of genres, artists and songs – we have a huge cultural legacy of music to draw on yet you just get people standing up and churning out Mariah Blarey or R ‘not suspicious in any way’ Kelly.

Besides, it’s noticable that the singers who step away from the norm seem to do better.

So, in the tradition of Warwick Blogs – what would you sing if you went on X Factor to impress the judges?

My choices would be:

1. John Cage – 4’33” – the perfect choice to show off my musical talents
2. Nick Cave – Staggerlee – one of the most violent nasty songs I’ve ever listened to
3. Julian Cope – Mik Mak Mok – gibberish, thus perfect for X Factor!

  1. Have you been reading Heat? That’s this week’s burning question!

My Name is Luca – Suzanne Vega

  2. is it?

I can’t say that’s one of my preferred reads.

    Interesting choice, btw.

But the morons who love the show, love those shite songs, so it feeds the trolls, so to speak. When it comes to these kind of shows, i prefer my theory of blissful ignorance. If you do your best to deny their existance, they (almost) don’t exist. Until we have discussions like this.

  4. I would definitely do 4’33”. Heck, I even did Dance Dance Revolution steps for it, it’s so awesome.

  5. Vision Divine – Here In 6048 – because it’s awesome prog even though I can’t actually sing it
Dream Theater – Through Her Eyes – because it’s awesome prog that I probably could actually sing, it’s also quite short if you cut out the intro
Sonata Arctica – Replica – because it’s one of the greatest ballady songs ever and the vocal range isn’t too difficult

  6. Tom S – Hey – I work in comms so I have to be in touch with the media world. Whatever I think of the show, it’s damn popular, so what the hey.

Luke – Dance Dance for 4’33” – now that i’d like to see. I assume it was some sort of standing stock still affair. Maybe you could take advantage of the new media tags and demo your thang…

    Babyshambles – Fuck Forever

  9. Casey – he hides his light – wasn’t he in series 2?

Mat – excellent sir. While we are on the subject, why not Dead Kennedys Too Drunk to Fuck – I am sure Simon Cowell would like that one…

  10. Lamby

I seem to recall Cage’s piece is actually in three movements, so I would choose to do all three. :)

    20 Sep 2006, 18:56

  11. The Divinyls – I Touch Myself

    20 Sep 2006, 19:41

  12. Lamby – would they let you do all three? I suppose you could go to three auditions and do one at each. That would really annouy them.

Perhaps something very short a la Ramones would also be good – a song that is over in 15 seconds. I’d like to see that too.

Guy – I assume you would include appropriate actions…

  13. Very boring answer here but I would do Downtown by Petula Clark. I love that song and Singstar reckons I can sing it quite well, unlike all the other songs.

  15. No way would I do anything mainstream, I’m such a non-conformist like all the other super cool students. I’d pick something really obscure and indie, like maybe a Spice Girls B side.

  16. james – you cynic you…

    22 Sep 2006, 09:10

  17. psh, none of my choices were mainstream, only one of them is actually on a major label…
