Belly and the moonflowers

Radio 6 just played a Belly track – lovely to hear it. It triggered some thoughts about bands I used to listen to in the early 90s.

There is one in particular I would love to trace – Bristol's finest – The Moonflowers.

As I recall the band decamped en masse to the south of France to live in a barn with a pensionable hippy. They had a reputation for this sort of thing, after performing naked at the Ashton Court Community Festival and nude album covers.

I had a couple of albums – Hash Smits, From Whales to Jupiter… , but they got stolen when I was at Uni. I think they are now both unavailable.

If anyone (long shot I know) thinks otherwise or perhaps has a copy it would be great to know.

Moonflowers – I think some of them also became Praise Space Electric – you might be able to find their album 2 Leaving Demons on ebay (just checked – there's plenty out there). Not quite as happy hippy as the Moonflowers, but pretty joyous nonetheless.

Ahh The Moonflowers…used to run The Dig In on the Thekla in Bristol. Praise Space Electric were pretty interchangeable with the 'flowers. I used to think how happy I would be if I woke up and found I was a Moonflower. I lost my copy of Whales too.

  6. The Thekla – now that brings back a few memories. Oil based grime and dark corners – what a perfect place it was (is? has it changed – it's been a while since I visited)

Guitarist Jesse plays in Morningstar and Jukes. Errol the drummer plays with a band called CCQ. Dunno what happened to the rest of them…
The Thekla is pretty much the same and it's Ashton Court this weekend!

  8. Ah! Ashton Court – do they still have the guy who's naked except for a few sticks round his midriff?

God I remember the Moonflowers. Saw them once in London (some Mean Fiddler venue somewhere) and was blown away, as were the people with me. Loose, honest, magnificent, I raved about them for ages. Just about to listen to the tunes Jesse Vernon linked – try to recapture the magic.

  16. It would be good to get the stuff online. It would be great to set up a site with downloads from local bands no longer on the circuit but who never got so big as to get major coverage.

great thread! i love the moonflowers, they were a great band and great guys when i met them a few times in Brighton (hi jesse, i'm sure you won't remember me, but hi anyway :) ). i'm so glad the fansite exists, been catching up with everything they've been doing since i bought 'colours and sounds'- couldn't get hold of much after that although my mate ian had a preview tape of the morningstar album, which i copied and then lost, i'm gonna buy it now of course! they were a big influence on me and my music (warning, plug coming) www.guyjames.com

@scott- i've got that album, i'll see what i can do about 'distributing' it, unless jesse or someone else can direct you where to buy it … watch this space….

  18. I notice a running theme here – how many moonflowers (or related) albums have gone missing.

Perhaps they are trying to return to some mystical location where they can groove in their own relaxed way?

Seriously though, we've got to look after these precious nuggets more carefully – love and caress them.

well, i've found where to buy the Moonflowers' albums:

    link

this appears to be run by Jesse so I think it's better to buy them direct from him- they've actually got the last 2 albums they did which were impossible to find in the UK, so i reckon i'll be getting those in soon…

glad to see morning star are still going strong, but reallly sad that Toby the drummer has left us:
    link

i only met him a couple of times and he didn't say much but he was a really nice guy…

    moonflowers revival!!!!

    :)
