A question I have asked myself recently.
Two people I know have considered putting themselves in the literal firing line and it raises some interesting questions about the risk you'd be willing to take on in order to raise some cash.
Firstly associate X is planning to head off to Iraq to work as private security. The money is good but to me the risk seems astonishing (not to mention the questionable moral issues.)
Secondly associate Z was lined up to go to Afghanisatan as part of the british expedition in the south. As a TA member this up–to–12 month tour would have netted around £5k, which considering the risk seems a pitiful amount in return for your neck on the line (note that the job was not safe guard duty but dangerous supply chain work). Luckily, he is not going.
X knows the risks and will be well rewarded for taking them. Z was in the situation of knowing the risks and getting cock all for it.
I don't think I could do anything like this for whatever money. It's not that I don't think its in me to do that sort of thing (but that's a darker story for another time…) – I just can't think of a price for which I would be happy to risk my own life and the happiness of my loved ones in such a mercenary (and that's a fair word I think) way.
