personal influences

While not directly related to the decision tools or methods, another very important factor that comes into play is the person making the decision. Looking back at how we went about deciding the methods for each of the criteria, each of us had various different views on which decision tool for which decision. I suppose its due to the past experiences of the person along with his or her personality style. As a result, arent each one of our decisions ideal only for our own requirements. Does not each decision taken by any person require it to be modified depending on the requirements of the person who you are helping. Imagine the case of the waveRiders itself, what we suggest and might make logical sense to us, does not necessarily be what is best for waveriders. So in the real world situation too, how can recommendations made by consultants be completely accepted??

  1. Thomas the concept that you are looking for has been analysed all over the blogs and is call BIAS. And as you can see in some of them (fani’s) it is directly related with the decision making process :P.

    But yes it is part of the arguments that each team achieved to support every decision that made it; so thats the focus of the consultancy firms.

  2. I think I will agree with Carlos. The decisions taken from the team members can be based on simplified strategies or heuristics that they have created during their lives and in the focus of this experiences probably we are talking about anchering bias – sticking to their criterias, without taking in accound other ones… in this case yours.

    As a conclusion I think that is quite in the context of RDM and hides the same trap as all the decision making tools.

  3. I think that different opinions can create something better.. . . . . . I do not think that recommendations by consultants are entirely accepted. . . There are going through a process first by every board of directors. . .

  4. Thomas, one should never completely depend on the consulatant. Althought they may come up with bright ideas, their decisions would always have to be verifiied in anycase. And this is where the competence and skills of the senior management as highlighted by Vagaelis steps in

  5. @carlos: hahahaha the first part made me look like a bit of a fool, but my point was in regard to the consulting firm and how to accept their decision.
    @ivo: I do recognise your point about the bias, after all, that is pretty much the one point that stood out. However my main point seems to have been missed. Probably due to a fault in the way i structured the blog
    @vagelis and aditi: even though the consultants work is reviewed by the board, I suppose that their basic decisions are based on their own bias which might or might not suit the requirements

  6. different opinion can make a difference my friend… consultants are there to help.. no to give dictations.. soo.. be a leader and make a decision which is in the best interest of you and your people…
