Feedback strategies with growing student numbers

The History Department has traditionally used a mixed feedback strategy, providing written comments on formative student work throughout the year, followed by a 15 minute face to face essay tutorial. For summative feedback, written comment is provided on both essays and exams electronically via Tabula, providing brief comments and two or three 'ways to improve'. However, as a consequence of dramatically increasing student numbers, this strategy has come under strain. The departmental teaching fellows often teach 6-7 groups of 15 students per group on the same module. This means that they face not only marking 90+ essays within the allotted 20 days but also organising essay feedback sessions of 15 minutes each (22.5 hours!)

So, the Department are discussing alternative manageable feedback strategies and would welcome comments and suggestions. These are our thoughts so far:

  • the minimum expectation is that formative essays will be marked within the 20 days and returned to students. Students will then be offered the chance for a face to face tutorial outside the 20 day window, but these will not be compulsory as in the past
  • summative feedback will remain the same
  • there will be a wider variety of feedback strategies in addition to, or instead of the written comments: audio feedback inserted into pdfs or word documents; annotated essays using track changes/comments; peer feedback in seminars; generic essay tutorials in class after the submission of a piece of work making general points about how the whole cohort tackled the assignment and ways to improve; adoption of forms/boxes to tick against marking criteria

We will discuss these strategies with our students but welcome any thoughts in our on-going discussions.

Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning Event

This event will celebrate the power of the interdisciplinary through the work of four National Teaching Fellows who will contribute, between them, three discrete 40-minute sessions.

  • Dr Laura Ritchie, Teaching Fellow in music at The University of Chichester will invite colleague to learn the cello.
  • Professors Carol Rutter and Paul Raffield will demonstrate their teaching methods in their shared Warwick module 'Shakespeare and the Law'.
  • Dr Nicholas Monk, Deputy Director of IATL, will offer a series of 'take-away' exercises designed to appear to students across faculties and disciplines.

No preparation is required, other than a willingness to participate and collaborate.

The event is designed to demonstrate some of the ways in which teaching and learning styles and activities can function across disciplines and faculties. It is also intended to provoke questions, and will require that participants imagine their disciplines in slightly different ways from those to which they may have been accustomed. Perhaps your discipline and the way you teach is more 'interdisciplinary' than you think.

The three hours will conclude with a plenary and some definitions of what we might mean in our teaching and learning experiences when we talk of 'interdisciplinary', 'multidisciplinary' and 'transdisciplinary'.

WATEPGR 2012/13 Winners and Commendees

Congratulations to the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduate Research students Winners and Commendees.

This year we received over 130 nominations (a 30% increase on last year), with students from every faculty being nominated.

The winners will recieve £500 and commendees £200, to spend on their research or teaching activities. All nominees have been sent a congratulatory letter from the PVC for Education Jan Palmowski.

The awardees wil be presented their certificates at the Teaching Excellence Award ceremony on Wednesday November 6th. This is being hosted by Provost Professor Stuart Croft, and the PVC's for Education, Professors Christina Hughes and Jan Palmowski.

Ramphal Rooms

In November 2011 IATL and the Space Management and Timetabling Team were awarded £1,000,000 from the University's Capital Investment Fund (CIF) to refurbish teaching rooms in the Ramphal building. Ramphal was chosen because it is heavily used by a broad and representative range of the student population. A research project to evaluate the success of the refurbishment was carried out in January-March 2013.
