Simulator for a Vehicle Programme at Jaguar”
As part of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-funded Evolutionary Validation of Complex Systems
(EVoCS) project, a study has been conducted to set up an innovative and flexible reconfigurable Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)
platform for the testing and development of a vehicle programme. The key innovation of this HIL platform
is the use of flexible and reconfigurable signal-conditioning to establish connectivity between
the HIL simulator and the prototype Electronic Controller Units (ECUs) in the Electronic Body System (EBS)
of a vehicle. In the automotive industry, the electrical architecture of the car evolves through many
development phases and iterations. At each design phase of the vehicle, verification is performed to
assess whether the ECU meets the design specification. Changes may be made in the software code
of the ECU and the hardware interface may also be changed from one phase to the next. The full
functionality of each of the ECUs is achieved only after several iterations. With the use of the
reconfigurable platform, interfacing the ECUs during the development stage becomes easier.
As the ECU connectors change or when new pins are added, all that is required is to change
the signal conditioning interface of the HIL system while leaving all the other connections
intact. These aspects will be discussed in this paper. The key advantage of the reconfigurable
HIL platform is that it can be easily adapted for different vehicle programmes. Safety
(with respect to performing validation), cost (due to reduction in potential warranty bills)
and reliability have been improved with this unique flexible and highly reconfigurable
HIL platform as customization and reconfiguration of the ECUs to the test platform can
be done much faster which in turn leads to more thorough testing of the ECUs.
