Another Gmail enhancement

Writing about web page http://mail.google.com/mail/help/paper/

Gmail just keeps getting better and better. I’ve been waiting for this for ages. Being able to archive my gmail messages outside of gmail makes me feel much more comfortable about using it as my primary message store.

Shame – that would be really useful :-)

  2. I like the spam filtering on google.mail (same as gmail except for the address?). Pity there’s no IMAP interface.
As I’ve loads of old email on my desktop sent via all sorts of service providers, going over to web based mail would be a bit of a pain. Instead one day I will try alter my Thunderbird email data to support portability (and thus use on multiple computers, with easy synchronisation of the data)

I’m still waiting for a way to get all of my email archives into gmail, retaining original headers & dates, so that I’ve got everything in one place. I remember seeing articles a while ago, when gmail was first launched, with mechanisms for doing this with Outlook/Exchange. There was no way of doing it with GroupWise. Maybe, when my old Groupwise email is migrated over I’ll have to dig out these articles and try to do it. Having everything in one place would be really convenient.

In fact, I really do archive my gmail messages externally, just in case gmail goes belly up. I do it by POPing the messages back out again and storing them in a big (currently almost 2GB) Outlook PST file at home! I wouldn’t feel comfortable having my only copy of messages under somebody else’s control…
