New Atari Jaguars!

Writing about web page http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115280/rb/25135396786

I was looking through the Ebuyer site earlier today and was amazed to discover that you can buy a brand new Atari Jaguar console (with Cybermorph!) from the site, for £70. I wonder how they got them? I thought all the stock had been liquidated eons ago (I tried to pick one up cheaply at the time).

LocoRoco Theme

Writing about web page http://www.videocrab.com/locoroco/

LocoRoco boxI love LocoRoco; it makes me feel happy. I often find myself humming the stage tune over and over, even though I have no idea what the words mean because the lyrics are an invented language by the game creators. Someone has taken the time to turn the whole thing into a literal transcript, although I’m none the wiser. Like Katamari, you can tell someone really enjoyed putting this together.

So, download and join in…

Edge Magazine Special

Edge File Vol 1Ahh, real nostalgia. Edge magazine has released a compendium of its first 12 issues, from 1993 to 1994, and it’s a gem. The key difference here is that while retro magazines do a decent job of covering gaming-gone-by, looking backwards always risks missing how things really were – the context is always relative to now. File Vol 1 actually takes you right back into the days when the 3DO, Jaguar and PS-X were the subject of hype and speculation, CD was the new revolution and the PC Engine was an established favourite. There are articles on the Supergun, Renderware, 3DO, Microcosm, Daytona, Street Fighter, Doom, Saturn, Jaguar, Namco and loads more.

However, the best bit by far for me was in one of the letters pages:

You seem to have got excellent quality pictures of the PC Engine games in Edge one. How did you do this because on mine the screen display always looks so murky and dull?

What you need is a Colour Booster, which you should be able to from anywhere that sells imported PC Engine gear. The problem is that the Engine is not designed for an RGB display signal, and no-one has yet found a way of converting it internally.

The reason I loved this letter? Because it reminded me of my friend Ben, who is currently living in Canada and working for Ubisoft. Way back then, in between kicking my a*se at Bomberman ‘93 and Motoroader, Ben found a way to make a PCE output RGB soon after that letter appeared and import games shops would send customer machines to him for conversion. I remember going round to his house for a night of gaming only to find his room littered with bare PCEs and the smell of solder in the air. Great days. Thanks Edge. :-)

PS3 delayed until March

Writing about web page http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/afx/2006/09/06/afx2995774.html

Oh dear – Sony’s already precarious position receives another knock, with the announcement that the European release of PS3 has been delayed until March 2007. I’m sure I recall them promising no delays after the PSP launch cock-ups. Greg just pointed out to me that it gives Wii an improved chance and that XBox 360 will get another Xmas’ head start.
