How to hug : a guide for the male of the species

Now don't get me wrong, some of you are great at hugs and cuddles, some of you are only great at hugs and cuddles with the person you're going out with. Here is my handy guide to hugging:

  1. If you are much taller than the person you are hugging, bend down! She doesn't want to have to stretch her toes to the limit and also she doesn't want a mouthful of your chest.

  2. Hug like you mean it! None of this half-hearted bollocks. A hug is meant to be comforting or affectionate, not an expression of how little you want someone to get close to you and if they're your friend, you shouldn't have a problem with physical proximity!

  3. The key to a good hug is sustaining it. If you don't want to make the hug-ee feel somewhat rejected, there must be a decent length hug. Basically, don't release someone absolutely immediately that they've managed to get their arms round you.

  4. Cuddles: If you wish to administer a cuddle or you quite want a cuddle, hug should be greatly extended in length. Also, this is the only condition under which you're allowed to not bend down if your hug-ee is shorter than you. They can be allowed to nestle their head somewhere that it naturally falls.

N.B. If you have a better half of any kind, this all still applies. If they can't hack you hugging your friends then tough luck.

  1. At University we used to refer to our flatmate Alex's cuddles as 'cardboard cuddles' because of the lack of flexibility, conviction or comfort!

I think this is a useful guide – well done!

  3. I'm concerned people need such a guide! Nonetheless worthwhile notes for anyone in need. People can actually find partner who get arsey about contact with another person that isn't them?!?

  5. It's true. And many people are scared to hug, they think people might think the wrong thing. But any friends can hug and everyone feels much better afterwards.
