I briefly 'Lost' the will to live

I watched Channel 4 last night, a victim of so much unwarranted hype produced by a company (ABC) trying to justify the massive amount of money spent on creating a series-length Hollywood film. What swayed me, apart from having nothing better to do, was Matthew Fox on the news (not an advert, but the news!) yesterday morning, describing the show as "sophisticated".

Yeah right. Fifteen minutes in and I'd seen every Hollywood cliche played for unintended laughs. I watched to the end of the first hour – which was about 50:50 adverts to programme – and it got no better. If that was really as sophisticated as modern TV drama gets, then I'm either a snob or a cynic. American TV audiences aren't really so unsubtle, are they? Either way, it gives me a few more free hours in my week!

With E4 I got 3 installments in one evening.

Hooked by the horror/sci-fi twist I think?

Much as I hate advert breaks I do find them useful for cooking dinner/washing up/pouring another drink…

  3. I liked it too, despite laughing at some of the more Hollywood lines, such as 'you have any colour preference?' 'Standard black.'

Thought they did build up the suspense well, otherwise I would have lost interest pretty early on. Good clean escapist fun. :-)

(Plus I was watching with my friend, who kept claiming the hobbit bloke was attractive, which I didn't agree with, and so there was a certain satisfaction in watching him be revealed as an extremely unattractive wimpy ex-boyband druggie as the show went on, to the point where even she had to admit he wasn't quite so fetching as she'd first thought. This may have had something to do with my enjoyment… We were also playing 'Match the Lost actor with the one hit wonder.' ie Pregnant woman – Roswell High, dad guy – the guy who played Mercutio in R+J. Hours of fun! The drinking game cannot be far off…)

I quite enjoyed it in a 'televisual equivalent of a hollywood blockbuster' kind of way. Not too deep, a bit silly, but rather good fun.

However, if you want to see real American drama, check out Six Feet Under or the Sopranos. Nothing I have seen on British television has come close to these masterpieces. And the final series of Six Feet Under starts on E4 next week – how exciting!

  5. Things you should know:

    1) The series takes a good 5 or 6 episodes to properly get going. Then it is really good.

    2) I just lost the Game. Damn you.

    Hmm, I wonder which.

  7. based on comments from some americans, later episodes start getting some quite subtle bits. There's only so subtle you can be about a plane breaking into three pieces and crashing on an island.

  9. Andrew: The series settles down into the formula of showing the back-story of one of the main characters each episode (until near the end irrc). This way there is a lot more scope than just the general way in which they survive on the island. I want to say more, but I won't cos that would spoil the series, and be very unfair.

  10. Sorry Simon I quite liked it too. Nothing wrong with few cliches I say :D

The adverts did annoy me though. It also irritated me that the 'hero' was predictably named Jack. He doesn't even look like a Jack. C'mon Hollywood, surely you could've done better?

  11. You're telling me about the advert-programme ratio!

I've already seen all of Lost and yes, the acting is a little poor, there are some really bad bits in the script, but the thing which makes you keep watching the fact you want to know what happens next! Don't be put off by the whole monster thing….the episodes coming up are really cool (and some are really quite good.)

  12. the jack thing irritates me to hell.
