No matter what excuses may be constructed regarding stress, the prevailing culture in Abu Ghraib and man's inhumanity to man, Charles Graner is clearly guilty. So, as my housemate observed, his defence lawyer Guy Womack is clearly just out to entertain the jury.
On the picture of Graner and Lynndie England behind a human pyramid of naked Iraqis with bags on their heads: "Don't cheerleaders all over America form pyramids six to eight times a year. Is that torture?"
And on the picture of England – Graner's girlfriend and one of the soldiers under his command – holding a leash attached to a beaten Iraqi lying naked on the floor: "You've probably been at a mall or airport and seen children on tethers; they're not being abused. You're keeping control of them. A tether is a valid control to be used in corrections... In Texas we'd lasso them and drag them out of there."
The report didn't say whether he was referring to kids or prisoners with his last remark.
