Bits & Bobs

On Saturday there was a RaW OB (Outside Broadcast) for the Uni open day. We had 3 shows live on air from the piazza and then the Wind Orchestra and Rev (Revelation Rock Gospel Choir) performed and I played some music while they were setting up and afterwards. It was quite fun but I did get sunburnt on the back of my neck and my forearms.

Later that evening I went to a pub in Cov with Ian where I helped him drink some of the 8 free pints that he had won in the pub quiz. We then went onto Jumpin Jaks. I’ve never been to a Jaks before, we have one in Maidstone but I never went to it. It’s slightly different to what I was expecting and has really over-priced drinks (>£3.30 per bottle & £3.10 for a pint of coke) but was quite a fun night.

We left at about 2:30am, Ian got a taxi back to campus and I walked home via a chip shop. I got in at about 3 and then didn’t get up again ‘til midday. ‘Twas a good night.

This morning I woke up to what sounded like someone bouncing a ball agains the wall next door. It just kept going “ba-dum” every few seconds, the stopping for a bit and then starting again. When I was a bit more awake I noticed that I coincided with cars going past the front of the house.

It turns out that they have put one of those traffic survey things in the road just outside the house. You know the sort, one of the things with 2 rubber pipes across the road. Now everytime a car goes past I can hear it go “ba-dum” over the pipes. As soon as the recorder has gone I’m going to go out there are remove those pipes any way I can.

Ken and I have managed to organise a time to go and see James and Fi in Southamton this weekend, and then next weekend I’m going home for a few birthday celebrations.

Anyways, the new guy in our house is arriving tomorrow so I need to be awake when he arrives :) Night all.

The Morning of the Student Radio Awards 2006

I’ll start at the beginning. On Wednesday evening I went to check that everything I was going to wear to the awards was ready and found that I hadn’t actually brought my jacked up from home at the beginning of term. I had a little panic and considered asking my housemate if he had one I could borrow, then it occured to me that even if he did it wouldn’t have fit me.

I decided to get up early next morning, go into town and see if I could hire one to match my trousers at a decent price. I got up around 7 and got the bus into town where I found the 2 mens formal hire shops that I had looked up on yell.com. One opened at 8 and the other at 9, and I had a lectire at 10. I wandered round for a bit to see if I could find any suitable shops. (No pun intended) I went into West Orchards and found a couple more suit shops and also found out that it joins onto that pedestrian bit just up from the fountain, whatever it may be called.

I decided against going to one of the formal hire places because it would be expensive, probably not possible at no notice and embarrasing. I went into one of the shops in West Orchards and they had some nice jackets for £60 but they wouldn’t have matched my trousers. I then went into the next one and they had 1 jacket for ~£40 that didn’t match and some suits for around £55. I then remebered the big “new” primark store, so went to look in there.

I got a black jacket and pair of trousers for £26. I know primark stuff isn’t great quality but it really only had to hold out for this one night. Satisfied with my buy I left and headed into Uni via home to drop off my shopping.

After my lectures I went straight home, got changed and headed back to campus to catch the coach to London.

That will do for tonight. I need my sleep, as you will find out when I continue tomorrow.

SRA Awards

This has come up very quickly. On Thursday afternoon a load of people from RaW will be heading to London for the annual Student Radio Awards. RaW or members thereof have got an impressive 8 nominations in 6 different categories. See here for more details.

It promised to be a good night of drinking & celebrations as well as a chance to catch up with the people who graduated last year and see what they have done. We then leave London at 3am on Friday morning so I doubt that most of Friday will exist. If you are in any of my lectures and don’t see me there can you grab me a copy of any notes please :) Thanks.

Loooooooooooooong Time, No Blog

So, it’s been over 3 months since I last made a blog entry but I guess that’s because I don’t experience many new things at home so there isn’t as much that I find a need to tell others about.

I got myself a job for 4 weeks in August which earnt me a bit of money and I also got some money for my birthday. I’ve already spent all the money on a new 200Gb SATA Hard Drive and a USB Freeview TV Stick which doesn’t work as I don’t have any USB 2.0 ports. So now I’ve had to spend £5 on a USB 2.0 PCI card from eBay.

Anyway, I am currently turning my room upside down to try and find the book vouchers that I know I have from school prize day prizes so I can go to Waterstones and get a textbook for this year. In the meantime I’m also choosing what bits of the masses of stuff I have I want to take back to Uni.

The house is almost ours now. Dad and I are going up on Monday to pick up the keys and sort out any last minute bits like un-blocking and fixing the gutters etc. I am then staying until christmas. In a terrible turn of events NTL aren’t coming to fit the broadband, phone and cable TV until Webnesday evening so I’m going to be internetless for a few days but I think I’ll manage to survive :)

I have to get back to rummaging now so see you all back at Uni soon and don’t forget to listen to RaW for good music, chat and important service announcements from ITS

Hong Kong

While I'm in the blogging mood I thaught I'd plug the RaW competiton to win a trip to Hong Kong for 2 people for 3 nights with an Island tour thrown in for good measure. You have a week left to enter and all you have to do is answer 10 questions.

See http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk for more details.

Destruction

I just pulled a radio studio apart in a day, then beat a snooker player 3–1 at pool. Overall a good day.

For the time-lapse video of the studio demolition (and rebuilding) see here

I am the 2nd to arrive at RaW at about 8:50, as you can see on the video, (Ian was 1st at about 7:30, foolish man) and am the last to leave at about 21:30. That's dedication, but that's also fun.

More to do tomorrow, ceiling to sand down, windows and fixtures to mask and then it's being spray painted white. I do have lectures to go to and work to do but I will fit it in around that.

Fun.

No such thing as a free lunch …

… think again.

I got the following all free from RaW Sport Not Out.

  • Farmhouse Pizza
  • Garlic Pizza Bread
  • Potato Wedges
  • Chicken Strips
  • 1.25 Litres of Coca Cola
  • 3 packets of Peanut M&M's

All for just a bit of browsing on the internet to find the answer to a sports based question.

So there is such a thing as a free lunch (well a free dinner anyway).

Less Worried, More High

OK. I'm not so worried about Mat as I have spoken to him on MSN Messenger.

Today (well yesterday now) I had my first show on RaW with Lorenco. We have decided to call it "As Time Goes By" as it is a decade show, starting with the 60's and working up to the present day by the end of term. It's from 11 – 12 pm and we had fun playing stuff from that decade (and 3 new ones from the playlist). It was quite scary but also quite exhilerating and it went quite quickly. We had 5 emails in, 3 from people we don't know, 1 from Tanya, one of the people on my floor, and one from my brother Martin. Afterwards I felt really awake and now I am still up and blogging at this stupid time in the morning.

I may put up an edited version of the show somewhere, at some point, as I can't put the music up on the internet due to copyright restrictions.

If you have any intersting facts, comments or requests please email me at spain@radio.warwick.ac.uk and I'll see what I can do.
