Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7150693.stm
It seems that BBC Radio 1 have now reversed their decision. All I can say is “Good”. I do have to pick up on this quote from the end of the article.
Veteran gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said Radio 1’s original actions were right. “The word faggot is being sung as an insult, alongside scumbag and maggot. In this abusive context it is unacceptable,” he said.
Grow-up! What has this got to do with gay rights? Gays have as much of a right not to be insulted as anyone else and you don’t hear any other rights groups compaining that they are insulted by this song.
Plus, at the time I don’t know if faggot even had the same meaning as it does now.
You can’t win!

This just got me so riles that I had to take a couple of moments out of my work day to blog it.
I just heard on the news that BBC Radio 1 have censored Fairytale of New York by removing the words “Faggot” and “Slag”. Listen here.
If I felt like it I’m sure I could come up with a whole list of words that Radio 1 boradcast that are far worse than those two.
It’s just rediculous.
Oh, and a by-point, Fairytale of New York is not a Christmas song, it is just a song that happens to be set at Christmas time. Kirsty McColl said so herself.

I’ve booked myseld into way too many TV recordings recently but they’ve all been quite good. I’ve got lots of “Two Pints …” tickets and a cople of “Would I Lie To You?” ones. I have also been to my 1st live recording and an amost live recording.I saw Marcus Brigstocke in “The Late Edition” which is live on the BBC. Also, today, I went to see the rehearsal for “Saturday Live Again”. You may remember “Saturday Live” (if you’re old enough) which started in 1986 and was presented by Ben Elton. This was a one-night-only resurrection presented by Marcus Brigstocke with some great acts:
- Hard Fi
- Bon Jovi
- Mitchell and Webb
- Jimmy Carr
- Little Miss Jocelyn
- Ben Elton
Jimmy Carr couldn’t be there for the rehearsal because he was doing a live stage show but it was good fun. It also gave me a chance to see how an (as-)live show is done.
The main thing I remembered that prompted me to write another blog entry was something I saw on a bus. The advert says something like “Shrooms – Prepare To Get Wasted” then has the comment “It’s Like Blair Witch On Acid” ... surely it’s like Blair Witch on shrooms?? I hate stupid things like that.
If you’ve seen “Part Troll” you’ll know what Bill Bailey would think of this. If you havn’t seen it I’ll upload it soon (maybe).
