It seems that BBC Radio 1 have now reversed their decision. All I can say is “Good”. I do have to pick up on this quote from the end of the article.
Veteran gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said Radio 1’s original actions were right. “The word faggot is being sung as an insult, alongside scumbag and maggot. In this abusive context it is unacceptable,” he said.
Grow-up! What has this got to do with gay rights? Gays have as much of a right not to be insulted as anyone else and you don’t hear any other rights groups compaining that they are insulted by this song.
Plus, at the time I don’t know if faggot even had the same meaning as it does now.
You can’t win!

Now that downloads contribute to the charts older songs, such as FTONY, now count towards the top 30. In a plot to get FTONY to no1 (thus preventing BBC rival ITV’s X-Factor from winning) Radio 1 plot a media furor just before christmas which has the effect of reminding everyone how good a song FTONY is and thus everyone downloads it and makes it no1 for christmas.
Now that would be a public good if I ever heard one.

It’s a good plan and anything to keep the X-Factor person off the top spot but Mariah Carey is beating the Pogues & Kirsty Maccoll on both the Single and Download charts

ah – yes, but those charts predate the current arguments about lyrics – FTNY is no2 on iTunes at the moment (behind god awful Carey)

Tatchell is saying the use of the word as an insult is the problem.

On behalf of the twig community, I am appalled and shocked by the use of this word in a popular Christmas song as an insult. In this abusive context it is unacceptable and promotes violence against the entire tree community. Particularly at Christmas, a traumatic time for the thousands of trees murdered in the name of religion, the use of this insult in the song is especially offensive.
On a more serious note, I think this is the kind of argument that sends us into never-ending cycles of PC-ness. ‘Faggot’ can be taken offensively by some- but then, the use of ‘nigga’ in rap songs is equally offensive, or ‘bitch’, ‘ginger’, ‘Bible-basher’..... Where do you draw a line? I think in this case the censorship would have been over the top- within the dramatic context of the song, it’s simply being used as a word from one individual to wind up another individual who will react badly to the word. It’s hardly a denigrating comment on all persons of a homosexual persuasion. Next we’ll be banning all songs with the word ‘Christmas’ in them because they don’t cater equally to all religions…..

It’s already started though.
Each year we see more and more of this americanism “Happy Holidays”. It really annoys me that we’re taking the christianity out of the holiday.
I’ve become happier with xmas as long as it is from the greek cross character but I think I still should get some “christ” stickers to stick over signs etc. :)
