Direct VS Derived Variables

The problem of Skinner et al is that the direct variable is a much better measure of hourly wage then the derived variable. However, we cannot observe this variable for a portion of observations. Their solution is to impute this variable for such observations. Then use imputed and observed values of direct variables to infer about the wage distribution.
