The Ultimate Music Song Lyrics Quiz, Part The Second
So I was also bored, and decided to nick this before anyone else did. I'm doing mainly to see if anyone is actually reading this anymore, and also to see who has similar tastes in music to me.
Some of these are rather obscure so I will be impressed with anyone getting them, particularly…1, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 16. Erm yeh. Have fun :-)

Soundtrack to Warwick
Inspired by Dan, I am going to attempt to list the songs I feel have most encapsulated these last three years. Explanations will be provided where possible, and please note that the year may not always correspond to the existance of a track at that time.
Year 1:
- New Frontier – Counting Crows
- New Slang – The Shins
- Oxygen – JJ72 - Fresher's Ball
- The Loner – Gary Moore
- Winter – Joshua Radin. Grandfather's death. Association via the ever-awesome Scrubs.
- Tears in the Rain – Joe Satriani
- Don't Panic – Coldplay
- I Understand It – Idlewild. Getting a 1st.
Year 2:
- Disconnected – Idlewild. No internet in term 1.
- This Is The Place – Red Hot Chili Peppers. Started to realise how much I liked Warwick.
- Globes and Maps – Something Corporate
- Konstantine – Something Corporate. Just two great songs I listened to a lot.
- Up All Night – Counting Crows. The only allnighter of my entire degree, on the deadline of the Software Engineering project.
- The Bronze Medal – Idlewild
- Summer Song – Tammany Hall
Year 3:
- Miracle – Vertical Horizon. Required to get a 1st.
- Honestly – Cary Brothers
- The Metre – Powderfinger
- Fine – Tammany Hall. Recovering from a bit of depression.
- I'm Not Afraid – Remy Zero
- As If I Hadn't Slept – Idlewild. Sleep deprivation in term 2.
- Wanderlust – Nightwish. The urge to explore campus before having to leave it.
- Breakdown – Mae. Waiting for the final results.
- The Scientist – Coldplay. Supposedly.
- Good Riddance (Time of your life) – Green Day. See Dan's reasons.
- See You Soon – Coldplay. Hopefully.
All Three Years:
- Simon – Lifehouse

Stealing another good idea
Writing about Musical meme from Syncspeed
Total volume of music files on my computer
According to Musicmatch (which I agree, is ace) I have 1314 tracks, with a total time of 94 hours, 6 minutes (6.76GB). This is a lie however. I actually have 2014 tracks (9.35GB), but I haven't got round to correctly tagging and adding the remaining 700 to its library.
The last CD I bought was
Le Bleu – Justin King, a beautiful piece of acoustic guitar genius.
Song playing right now
She Says – Howie Day
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me
There's much more than 5, and these particular 5 aren't representative of the whole particularly. Others include Hear You Me - Jimmy Eat World, New Slang - The Shins, I'm Not Afraid - Remy Zero, The Metre - Powderfinger, My Immortal - Evanescence, Too Long Awake – Idlewild…the list is long and now I'm just cheating the principle of "five".
Ready and Waiting to Fall - Mae This really could have been any song from the fantastic album – The Everglow. I picked this over the others because it has certain lyrics which just carry me away.
Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning) - Vertical Horizon Memories of Israel Tour in 2000. Jeez was it so long ago? When I think about it it seems like yesterday. I was listening to this song when as we arrived at the Dead Sea. Happier, more carefree times.
Globes and Maps - Something Corporate One of those songs which triggers introspection. Those quiet moments where I just shut out the world and sink deeply into the music, as if nothing else matters. "I write a letter from a one way train but I don't think you'll read it at all"...
Winter - Joshua Radin I first encountered this on an episode of Scrubs, during a funeral. Since then I've associated it with death to a certain extent, but I love it because of its tender beauty.
Summer Song - Tammany Hall Another band from Scrubs, and for once an upbeat song. It's bouncy and optimistic and reminds me of days like today, even in the depth of a dreary London winter.
The five people I'm passing the baton onto
Erm…Alan and Rachel seeing as they're the ones most likely to read this, and whoever else wants it.

Mangling the English Language
anthemesque
adj.
- Like an anthem.
- An uplifting piece of popular/rock music, eg. Paradise City by Guns N' Roses, Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis, or anything from the latest Idlewild album: Warnings/Promises.

Music that sounds like other music
Does anyone else notice things like this? The way certain riffs or chord progressions sound very similar to each other…I'll give you some examples:
Mr. Brightside by The Killers sounds like Lyric by Zwan
Hindu Times by Oasis sounds like Same Size Feet by Stereophonics
Belong by Remy Zero sounds like She's a Star by James
Gone to the Movies by Semisonic sounds like High and Dry by Radiohead
Go on, listen to them. I think you'll find I'm not wrong.
This has all been leading up to a question I was hoping someone could help me with. Three tracks in particular have been bugging me for a while, because they sound like something else but I can't put my finger on what it is. They are:
Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers,
Come with me (the harmonica intro only) by Zwan and
The Bends by Radiohead (the intro sounds like something the Stereophonics did but I can't work out what)
Any suggestions?
[Edit: OMGOMG How is it that the intro to Don't Look back in Anger can sound just like Imagine and I never noticed before just now?]
[New Edit: Oasis again - Cigarettes and Alcohol sounds suspiciously like Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi]

The most awesome lyrics in the world?
Writing about web page http://www.glassrecords.com/glassrecords.html
Fine by Tammany Hall NYC
Got my eyes
To watch the world
As I see it and maybe to realise
Its in colour
Not just black and white
Got my feet
To hold me up so
I can't come falling down
And crawl
On the cold street
Same old eyes
That used to watch you
Awake in covers and sleepless nights
I would watch
Until sunrise
That's when I'd say
We should go away
And sit where the oceans crash into sand
Don't you understand
Between you and me
Nothing is better than your company
Got my arms
I'm better at holding
Data onto what's mine
I won't let go
Got my heart
Which beats and beats and beats and beats
Until it is beaten and then
Won't beat again
That's when you'd say
I should go away
And sit where the oceans crash into sand
Don't you understand
Between you and me
Something inside just feels empty
Got my heart
And in time I think for
Christ's sake woman lets start
To heal
Got my soul
But I'd trade it with my eyes my arms my hands, everything
Just to give control
Give control and feel
Something
That's when I'd say
I should go away
And sit where the oceans crash into sand
Don't you understand
Between you and me
I still love you endlessly
You were just an image in my mind
That lasts a second
For a lifetime
How am I supposed to try and tell you
I'm feeling fine
I'm fine
I'm fine
I'm fine
I'm fine

New Levels of Awesome
Writing about web page http://www.justinking.com/
Just (re)discovered this guy. A friend of mine gave me a couple of his videos a couple of years back, and I just got round to checking some more of his stuff out.
I particularly direct your attention to the Videos section. If you appreciate acoustic guitar music, this is REALLY for you.
In fact, I have just bought his solo album, at the princely sum of $17 (about £9.50) including postage from the USA.

Top 10 Music
These are my favourite tracks of the year. Bear in mind that most of them probably weren't released this year, just discovered by myself for the first time. (This is limited to one song per band, because I'm like that…)
- Winter - Joshua Radin
- First Night - Tammany Hall
- Konstantine - Something Corporate
- The Metre - Powderfinger
- Come Around - Rhett Miller
- Gold In Them Hills – Coldplay
- Hear You Me - Jimmy Eat World
- Move On - Jet
- New Slang - The Shins
- Glorious Day - Embrace
Hopefully those links all work. Being on dialup I am disinclined to test them all right now. Shout at me if some of them are broken (or, even better, do the leg-work yourself).
[Edit: No, Amazon doesn't seem to like doing direct links like that. You'll have to scroll and find the track for those links. Shock, horror]
[Edit 2: Or you could copy the shortcut and paste it into a new browser. That seems to work :-S]
Also, here are my favourite albums I discovered this year:
- Back in the Bottle – Tammany Hall
- Bleed American – Jimmy Eat World
- North – Something Corporate
- Touch Wood – Antonio Forcione
- Odyssey #5 – Powderfinger
- Out of Nothing – Embrace
- The Instigator – Rhett Miller
- Oh, Inverted World – The Shins
- A Rush of B-Sides to the Head – Coldplay
- Steve O – Steve O'Reilly (Tammany Hall)
The actual number of tracks by Tammany Hall that I really like is HUGE, and I would be happy to give recommendations if anyone bothers to read this and respond. While most of Back in the Bottle is available to download from their own website, I still bought it, as they are a very good, unknown band, and because it was only about $12 including postage from the US. ;-)
(By the way, I came across Joshua Radin, Tammany Hall and Rhett Miller while watching that most awesome of TV shows, Scrubs.)
