Don't Panic

Writing about web page

This is going to be excellent. I am convinced. The books, of course, are legendary, and the radio series that preceded them even better. It's a pity about the TV series, but I feel this film will put all that to right. Except Marvin, who looks waaay too cute.
The snippets of speach during the trailer are enough to convince me that I can get over the characters not sounding like they did on the radio, once again with the exception of Marvin. Sorry Alan Rickman, but you just aren't quite depressed enough. And no one can ever quite replace the marvelous voice of Peter Jones as The Book, but Stephen Fry, smug-sounding toff though he is, comes very close.

Incidentally, Simon Jones, the who played Arthur Dent in both the radio and TV series, makes a cameo appearance as a Magrathean Announcer. Thank you imdb for that little gem.
Long live The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, and role on April 29th!

At the completely opposite end of the spectrum we find the trailer for Star Wars Episode III: Unnecessary Subtitle. While it looks fantastic, so did the trailers for I and II, so it's blatantly going to suck. A couple of my more naive friends doubt this of course, to which I say this: If I am right, I am vindicated. If I am wrong, I am happy and entertained. Either way, I win.

  1. Really? I saw the trailer and had this horrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach – I think they might have lost some of the original charm of it in making it a film, which was that very English deprecation… and yes, I saw Marvin and thought 'how can that robot be depressed? He looks far too white and chirpy.' Maye I'm just too wedded to the radio series… but I am yet to be convinced… Can't really judge till I've seen the thing though! Roll on 29th April indeed…

  2. It was the way that Martin Freeman, Mos Def and Sam Rockwell actually didn't sound at all bad that convinced me. Bearing in mind the director is also English I think that the humour will most probably be retained, albeit supplemented by a goodly amount of explosions.

  3. Hmmm… I'm torn.

The evil Hollywoodisation: (Cheesy American film announcer deep voice meaning to leave us in awe) "Arrrthuuurrrr Dent is one man…..with a destiny…. like no other…. " DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!
You never know. It's a shame there will probably be rather many Americans in it – Trillian for example is a yank, but might do a Kent accent (:S) and did I hear right?! Arthur shouted "Trishia!" in the trailer. Her real name maybe, but NO! Bad writer. Trillion is a much more sci-fi name.

And I think Marvin is well designed, with the huge head hanging off the tiny body and the large (furrowed) brow over the 'depressed' shaped eyes.

    But that's just me :)

  4. The evil Hollywoodisation seemed to be an ironic joke to me. Did I miss something? *blink*

  7. angonangon is it a holllywoodish production though? Otherwise I feel foolish. Perhaps I just expect things to be screwed by our cousins across the water all the time.

I thought Disney had something to do with it…
