Writing about: link

My labmates and I were surprised to see that there are some 220 buddhists in the British Armed Forces. Doesn't the whole principal go against the teachings of their religion as they are dedicated to promoting peace at all costs?

  1. Maybe they only go on peace keeping missions?

  2. Is that allowed?

  3. Hmm.. I suppose not. They could always be medics etc.. I should imagine the army couldn't discriminate against them on the basis of their religion, and there must be jobs which are humanitarian and not killing people.

  4. No, indeed there shouldn't be any discrimination on religious grounds. But as as pacifist would you feel entirely happy with yourself working for an organisation that is in existance to fight wars, even if your own role is peaceful? And even if you yourself have no problem with it, would other Buddhists share your view?

  5. Perhaps they were drunk at the time they signed up and are on a minimum contract?

  6. Do Buddhists drink?

  7. Buddhist moral code includes:

'to abstain from intoxicating drugs or drink'.

    Kinda negates your theory, Rich.

Buddhists, They are always talking about the inner peace. They also believe that the world is evil and painful and the only way to avoid that is to Zen and be isolated from the world. However, in order to tell people about that, they have to be in this evil world.

As you might know, the eastern martial arts system originated from a place call Shaolin Temple, which is a small temple in South of China of a Zen sect. They very Buddhist and very violent.
