Drunken mistakes

I've got a strange feeling that by the end of this term I may have no leg hair left…

Ah well, at least I'll have raised some money for charity.

What not to do with your phone

During symphony orchestra this evening we played Bernstein's West Side Story symphonic arrangement, possibly the most challenging piece I've played at university. During the rests, as often happens when my mind is trying to concentrate on something, my hands needed to do something, and I fiddled with my phone in my pocket. During the course of the first half of the rehearsal, I managed to unlock my phone, turn it off, turn it on again and then type my PIN in wrongly three times, all without me really knowing what I was doing.

Error.

I've managed to unlock my phone again now, but I found it a very strange sensation whilst it didn't work: I kept on pulling my phone out trying to check it without really thinking about it, and not being able to made me feel strangely incomplete. It was just like checking your wrist when you want to know the time, only to find it's 2 freckles past pimple since your watch is by the kitchen sink.

Well, all's better now and I'm in contact with the outside world again.

I hope you all learned an invaluable lesson on how phones should be treated,

Sam

P.S. Could you tell I've had a few drinks?

Alphabet thingy

A: The most Audacious thing you’ve ever done

Hrm, a few things spring to mind that aren't appropriate to be put on a public blog… I guess I'd have to go with charging lots of money to have TUB playing as pros at a wedding.

B: Favourite Badger joke:
What's Black, White and Hard?

A Badger with a machine gun…

C: Favourite Curry
Chicken Shashlik from the Bengal. What could be better?

D: Number of drinks it takes to get utterly Drunk
Hrm, this has changed a lot recently, used to be around 10 pints in the first year, but probably around 6 now. Or a bottle and a bit of wine can do it.

E: Your most Effeminate characteristic
Damn me for writing questions like this… Probably that my voice goes up two octaves when I try to act.

F: The last thing that you got for Free
An example sheet in the last lecture? The workshop last night is probably more apt.

G: Number of times that you’ve visited a Gym
Once in Southampton as a guest of a friend and never since.

H: Where you call Home
Used to be Southampton, now definitely Canley

I: (leaving things open for dodgy minds…) Any Instruments that you play
Drums, tuba, alto saxophone and clarinet. I did play the violin when I was around 7 too but was begged to stop…

J: (and again…) Favourite Juice
Apple and Elderflower from Tescos. Or if I'm counting smoothies, those Innocent things…

K: Song that you would sing Karaoke to
Bohemian Rhapsody. The only song I actually know the words to.

L: Number of times you’ve Laminated – and if you’ve achieved your laminating qualifications from the MC Office yet
Never :-( It's all very sad.

M: How much Money do you think you’d need to be happy?
I was once told "Money can't make you happy, but having no money can make you unhappy". Seriously though, enough to buy a widescreen plasma TV…

N: Favourite Naan to have with aforementioned curry
Plain, though I don't really mind as long as it's not Keema.

O: Your Oldest possession
My old squash racket…

P: Your worst Phobia
Would have to be heights. Though my worst fear would probably of losing my hearing at some point

Q: Something that makes you feel Queasy
Anything to do with surgery, I can't watch Casualty and had to walk out of Spiderman as even that was too gruesome for me at one point. Don't tell anyone though, it's a secret…

R: Recent New Year Resolutions made, and how many still going
To play more squash and exercise if not daily then regularly: I do it for 2 weeks, get lazy and stop for 2, start again etc.

S: Favourite Season
Summer, mainly because of the best time in any year – the last few weeks of term 3.

T: Number of cups of Tea consumed per day (on average)
4.

U: The most Useful lesson you’ve ever learnt:
Keep smiling!

V: Number of Valentines cards received (either in your life or in the last year – depending on how popular you are!)
0. Ever.

W: A film that can make you Weep
Never cried during a film, not even Bambi. I must be soulless.

X: Have you ever dyed your hair to become Xanthocomic (blonde)
Never dyed my hair, though I have worn a few wigs.

Y: The first memory you had, at your Youngest
I have possibly the worst memory in the world. The first thing I can really remember is when I was getting a train set for my birthday when I was 8. The next memory after that is probably getting told off for putting too much paint in a pot when I was 10…

Z: Favourite animal you could see in a Zoo
I generally like looking at the birds when I'm at a zoo…

Valentine Cards…

Hi all,

Looking at responses to my alphabet (which I wasn't really expecting – I mainly just did it to see how difficult making one could be), I think an idea concocted at Sarah's birthday party should definitely happen now.

This is to install a Valentine card post box in the Music Centre in some way to make the sender anonymous. Hopefully this will lead to people getting more cards this year as it means you can just drop them in on your way to a rehearsal – much less effort!

Sam

P.S. I'll do the answers to my questions soon too I guess, but don't have time before this lecture, but as a sneak preview my answer to the V question is 0 too :-(

New Alphabet

Hi again all,

After doing the last entry of the alphabet with a few rubbish questions in it, I thought it couldn't be that difficult, so had a go at making my own.

This is still a work in process, just took me the 30 mins I had between doing an application form and watching Neighbours, so comments are more than welcome! Also, see if you can spot the letters I had the most trouble with…

A: The most Audacious thing you’ve ever done

B: Favourite Badger joke

C: Favourite Curry

D: Number of drinks it takes to get utterly Drunk

E: Your most Effeminate characteristic

J: (and again…) Favourite Juice

K: Song that you would sing Karaoke to

L: Number of times you’ve Laminated – and if you’ve achieved your laminating qualifications from the MC Office yet

M: (As seen on the BBC News website:) How much Money do you think you’d need to be happy?

Alphabet of me (jumping on the band wagon)

Writing about an entry you don't have permission to view

Just listening to the Joseph Megamix from Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, and to try to take my mind off of the 80s cheesiness I thought I'd write a blog – and what better than one that's already structured for me!

Oh, and the reason I'm listening to this, erm, interesting music, is I'm attempting to play tuned percussion for it in the first MTW weekend concert this Sunday at 2:30 in the Cooler! Come one and all, it's free!

A – AREA CODE YOU ARE IN RIGHT NOW:
CV4

B- BIRTHDAY:
6th July – such a long way away…

C- CURRENT CRUSH:
At the moment it's a Strawberry Krusha: just add milk and you have a strawberry milkshake! Amazing! And I'm not answering the real question am I…

D- FAVOURITE DRINK:
An ice cold bottle of Corona with a piece of lime. Delicious…

E- LAST THING EATEN:
Custard cream with my cup of tea.

F- FAVORITE FOOD:
Chicken Shashlik with egg fried rice and a plain naan from the one-and-only Royal Bengal.

G- WHAT GRADE ARE YOU IN:
4th.

H- CURRENTLY HATE:
Being so uncertain about what I want to do with my life when I leave. Bloody decisions…

I- I THINK:
As infrequently as possible.

J- CURRENT JOB:
First year maths supervisor.

K- ANY KIDS:
Not that I know of.

L- I LOVE:
Curry, drumming, playing squash, BBQs, poker, Pizza Express and Commutative Rings.

M- FAVORITE MOVIE:
The Shawshank Redemption for drama, The Rock for action and South Park the Movie for comedy (I'm sad, I know, but it's a classic…). Probably Shawshank over all.

N- YOUR PHONE NUMBER:
I'm not sure whether I should really post this on the internet… The programs that trawl these sites for contact details give me enough e-mail junk as it is without them ringing me too.

O- OVER OR UNDER:
Erm… Couldn't they think of a proper question for O? I guess it would have to be over as if you're on top of something you're generally fine, but if you're under you could end up a bit squashed…

P- FAVORITE PERFUME/COLOGNE:
I normally use Lynx as it's generally on a 2-for-1 somewhere… Not that I'm cheap at all, no…

Q- ANY LITTLE QUIRKS ABOUT YOURSELF?:
I have a tendancy to drum along to anything, on whatever, wherever I am. Worst place is probably when I'm driving, ruins my clutch control a bit, though the brake lights flashing on and off on motorways generally ensure I don't get tailgated…

R- LAST ROAD TRIP:
Hrm. Probably was when I went to Polzeath with some So'ton friends over Easter. That's been too long, but I guess I've had a rail trip to make up for it…

S- DO YOU SMOKE?:
Nope, never have and never will. Except once. Oops. Well, I was drunk, and in Amsterdam…

T- FAVORITE TV SHOW:
Lost at the moment, probably Family Guy over all.

U- COLOR OF YOUR UNDERWEAR:
Blue and white box pattern. Very nice.

V- LAST TIME YOU WERE IN VEGAS:
Never.

W- YOUR WISH:
To find a job that will make me happy, fit my ethics, keep me interested in it and pay enough for me to be able to get a huge TV.

X- X-RAYS TAKEN THIS YEAR:
None. Last one taken was in Latvia though funnily enough…

Y- NAME THAT STARTS WITH A Y:
Yasmin? They really couldn't think of any questions could they? How about "Favourite activity during Yuletide", or "Number of times you've seen a Yeti”. Much better, don't you think?

Z- ZODIAC SIGN:
Cancer.

A reminder, the first MTW weekend show: Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, The Cooler, 2:30, Sunday, Free.

Got that?

Good.

See you there then.

Sam

P.S. A very, erm, 'useful' fact for you: 10 of my entries ended in an ellipsis (a '...'). I use these too much…

About time to blog

Hi all,

The first couple of weeks have gone well. I started the term with 5 modules, which I've now dropped 4 of, and am very close to dropping the 5th, though I have started 2 totally new modules. It's very strange having just 9 hours a week, and even more strange to only have one nine o'clock: so strange in fact that I managed to sleep through it today! Admittedly, having the lie in was partially down to finally getting internet in our house yesterday: I ended up playing around on it until the early hours of the morning.

The strangest thing this term is finally having other percussionists at the uni, which is both refreshing as it lets me play just one part at a time and frustrating when I can't play a piece that sounds really fun! To compensate I've joined squash soc this year, attended some training for it on Wednesday, and aim to be fit by July!

Well, I'd better go and learn the DES encryption method now for my project and finish up marking my supervisees' differential equations assignment,

Sam
