Am I too loud?

Last night while drumming in a Wild Party rehearsal, I hit a cymbal and my stick snapped in half. This stick was less than a fortnight old and had only been taken out of its packet for Fame.

Am I bit too violent with the drums? Or is it because I did too many rim shots on the timbales?

  1. As I recall you showed us your sticks after like day 1 and they were truly f**ked up…

  2. Are you supposed to oil them or treat them or rub salt into them so they last longer or something.

    Or is that omlette pans?

  3. I've very rarely had problems with your drumming Sam, I find you very consistent and adaptable. I suspect your sticks get more of a pounding than they should at times because the blue music centre drum kit is quite a bit out of tune (at least I feel it is, because I have to gate it REALLY tightly to get a nice sound) and therefore the inclination is generally to hit harder to get the right noises.

I still think you're a rocking drummer even if MTW do have to keep you in sticks ;)

  4. No, you're not too loud at all… unless you're in a Wind Orchestra rehearsal and I'm sat right in front of you! :-p

  5. I think you're right about them being out of tune Chris – it's probably because the skins haven't been replaced since I started uni and they've had a good battering since then! When I try to tune them now I just turn the key and hope…

  6. You tune kit drums?

    Wonders will never cease.

You're certainly not too loud in Brass Band.

Maybe you should borrow that funky decibel meter from the boat we played on in the Thames? :-P

  8. I didn't think there was such a thing as too loud in drumming….

I'm sorry, did I read that right… "I did too many rim shots on the timbales". Nice.

  10. There certainly isn't such a thing as too many rim shots on the timbales!

  11. The only "too loud" on the drums is when the skin breaks. Play louder!

  12. Yeh, the ones on the blue kit need replacing anyway, might as well trash them first!

  13. yay for loudness! we are blatantly the superior wind orchestra section anyway, so we might as well drown out everyone else :-p

  14. "we are blatantly the superior wind orchestra section anyway"
No you're not. The brass section quite obviously are. We can play loud AND tunefully. All you can do is make a great racket :-p

"We might as well drown out everyone else"
    That's OUR job!!

  15. Yes, so I gathered from the fortissimo bits in The Ringing Isle… My ears still haven't recovered!

I'd say quietness rocks – and indeed it does at times – but I can go with loudness as well. There's something immensely satisfying about playing loudly, even if it does irritate whoever's in front of you!

Personally though I think you're all too loud :-P

  16. Although obviously I meant "quietness rocks" in the sense that quietness/calmness can often be a good thing; given that quietness is somewhat the antithesis of rock, perhaps should have thought that one through first!
